Re: Hawai‘i’s Japanese Buddhist Temples Are Struggling to Keep Ancient Traditions Alive

In 2019 I was in Maui for work. I visited several dharma centers available there when I had time and they were open. The Kagyu center was reasonably well attended despite their head not being there, they seemed an active concern and I participated in a quite nice open service & spent time in the...

Re: Dealing with the Blues through Practice

Serve others, ie, volunteer work, ideally, anonymously. OTOH serving along side others doing the same can be a profound lesson in various dharma principles. Social engagement in that way is strongly emphasized in the sangha I attend. Oh absolutely wonderful input. Thank you. Outside of the general ...

Re: Fear of no/not self, what is the way out to this?

Best strategy is to not go at this alone- please find a teacher. Thanks you for your reply, I will move near a Buddhist monastery one day But isn't getting help in a buddhist forum from other buddhists in itself a way to not be alone? Its certainly a good start  A monastery is not esse...

Re: Please tell me how a meditator is supposed to sleep

Speaking as moderator here; dharmawheel cannot offer medical/mental health advise. I suggest you would likely be well served by consulting with a doctor with respect to sleep and a teacher with respect to meditation. Personally I have found that isolated do-it-yourself efforts are not productive in...

Re: what is the meaning of dreaming a Stupa

I've dreamed of demons and roshis's, ruins and palaces. Not sure that it matters much, the point seems to be practice- choose one that suits and get after it.

Well perhaps if one accepts that you might have to wait for eternity for wisdom, it is certainly the case that you will be waiting for eternity to get your luggage in the baggage claim at BWI. :D

Chapter 6 -------------------------------------- A long time on the road changes one's view- once I got tired enough and hungry enough it was time to consider options. I did some detective work first, getting to the world among the crowds of tourists and refugees; circulating, listening, pushed arou...

Re: Temples in the Tri-state area

There is Great River Tendai in Alexandria VA - visited there briefly when passing through and attended for a day, great folks there and abundant evidence of strong regular practice. But not convenient from New Jersey.

Re: “My mind isn’t like that”

Yeah my mind is calm and I can control thoughts when things are going well, getting what I want, nobody cutting me off in traffic, not getting obnoxious emails from the IT department, not being under pressure and stress for months/years at a time and so on. The tricky bit is to be calm with a contro...

Re: what sustains a bodhisattva?

When I was young, I was told a story about a hunter who saw a tiger and shot it with an arrow. When he went to inspect his kill, he saw it was just a rock, but somehow the arrow had penetrated the rock to the feathers. He tried to duplicate the feat but could not. The moral there is, he was able to...

Indeed he has. The ending of an age and the dawn of a new one for sure. How SGI organization moves past it will surely tell a lot about its health. We'll certainly be talking about it in our year end meeting tomorrow.
