Re: The Crystal and the Way of Light - Blog Post by Namdrol

Also Chaz, you apparently read the "if you're really inteligent" part in Namdrol's blog post and got incensed there and missed the rest of what he said, which is that he claims NOT to be one of those "really intelligent students" himself. Look more closely: "If you are reall...

Re: The Crystal and the Way of Light - Blog Post by Namdrol

Yes, this is also what I've been taught and it is quite traditional. It just has to do with having practiced in previous lives so that merely seeing a title in this life the entire meaning and import of the text unfolds within one's mind, due to that latent capacity being triggered by connecting wit...

Re: What's the definition of a Buddhist?

One who takes refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha is a Buddhist. Then, in terms of what one practices and whether or not it's in accordance with the Buddha's Dharma, the matter is simple: the Buddha identified the causes of suffering in cyclic existence and the causes of liberation. One's path ...

Re: New and Inquiring

Hi Rosemary :) Welcome to the forum. I hope you will soon find an excellent Dharma teacher and that you'll find just what you need in the Buddha's teachings. If you're comfortable telling us in what general area you live, maybe one or more of us will know of qualified teachers within a reasonable di...

Re: Responsability of the Bodhisattva.

According to the teachings I received it is more like we are imitation bodhisattvas in that we recognize the value of the mahayana dharma and have a sincere aspiration to practise it based on a genuine concern for the welfare of others arising from some level of love and compassion. On this basis w...

Re: Responsability of the Bodhisattva.

Bodhisattvas look with a critical eye at what they do, the results. Their time is precious, they are not some casual samsaric being to be lead around by mara's hooks of anger, jealousy, ignorance, attachment and greed, doing the bidding of anyone who arouses these afflictions in their mind. This br...

Re: Meditating with eyes half open

It is a bad doctrine where rules are a hard and fast certainty.Students of yoga must distinguish this matter by their own wisdom and by their own self examination use whatever is beneficial and that which brings comfort to them in meditation. There is no "bad doctrine" that says you're on...

Re: Interest in Buddhism for samsaric reasons.

It's hard to be exactly sure what the extrapolated data means, but I think it's safe to say these are trends of interest. This significant number of mala searches has been consistent for at least a year,.. I've considered making posts on malas which is actually a pretty boring topic just to get mor...

Re: Interest in Buddhism for samsaric reasons.

First things first, you're better off keeping your mind on your own practice than on what other people are or aren't doing. It's been well known since long before Google that the amount of people who truly try to put the Buddha's teachings into practice is comparable to the number of stars visible i...

Re: Tibetan madhyamaka

The verse is merely a statement of what the Buddha taught about the reality of things. The verse is not a syllogistic proof of what things are. The verse is an assertion not a syllogism. The verse is non-logical. The Buddha did not teach that way. Kind regards Much of the MMK is actually Nagarjuna ...

Re: Is it possible to have too much compassion?

It depends upon what you're doing. Sun Tzu remarked that excessive compassion could be a fatal flaw in a General (alongside being quick to anger, being puritanical, being too determined to live, and being too willing to sacrifice oneself). I would be inclined to agree. ============= Is your world-v...

Re: Tibetan madhyamaka

When I say "logic" I mean classic logic. Therefore I only accept Dharmakirit's logic as "logic". Considering this you just have to take one or two of Nagarjunas tetralemmas as masterpieces of non-logic. I do not say that these are completely illegitimate but it is not logic. kin...

Re: Tibetan madhyamaka

TMingyur, Could you please post an example or two of Nagarjuna's and Chandrakirti's supposedly logically inconsistent Madhyamaka reasoning? It would also be great if you could contrast those examples with some of Tsongkhapa's supposedly more logically sound versions of the same points. I ask this fa...

Re: Too much prostrations?

Joints & Elderly -- bad. Rinpoche, as I understand it, wouldn't want you to abuse your body for his sake . :) Surely he wouldn't want that, and surely he would give the same advice. Prostrations are not, however, in any way for the lama's sake. One prostrates to the objects of refuge - the lama...

Individual wrote:"Does a dog have Buddha-nature?"

The classic answer to this koan is no, but I have to disagree.
I'm not too familiar with koans, but I do know that the Buddha's teachings on buddha nature say that all sentient beings possess buddha nature.
