That metaphor certainly is a neo-advaita vedanta one. Before the 19th century there were no movie theaters in India.

Re: Advaita Vedanta and Dzogchen

It is unfortunately very common among both vedantins and buddhists to first misrepresent each others' views, then criticize the misrepresented views, and ultimately "refute" them. Whereas they just "refuted" a strawman representation of the others' viewpoint. (Same is also not t...

Re: Advaita Vedanta and Dzogchen

Whereas Shaivites who are Advaita Vedantan's believe that that they merge with Lord Shiva. That's quite a gross misrepresentation, if not simply wrong. There is theistic vedanta and non-theistic advaita vedanta. Then there are quite a few sub-schools that don't really agree with each others' points...

Laurence Khantipalo Mills is your guru? I am not debating, you are! Anatman is fine for me. Stop acting silly, I referenced the Sutta Nipata. It's part of the Therevadin Pali Canon, so it deserves some respect even from Tibetan Buddhists. Laurence Khantipalo Mills wrote the Therevadin Pali Canon? I...

Not at all convinced by one American Bhikkhu's idea, anatman is fine for me. Good luck with your soul journey. But you keep on debating and thus ignoring Gautama Buddha's own advise? Here's what - not a random American bloke but - Gautama Buddha said about having such debates: https://suttacentral....

Re: Advaita Vedanta and Dzogchen

Moksha in Vedanta and Buddhism are distinctly different, ignoring that crucial difference while diverting attention to superficial similarities are simply academic dishonesty. That's a claim. But where is the proof (other than you just relying on some philosophical arguments like: "Buddhists c...

Re: Advaita Vedanta and Dzogchen

Thats modern day Neo Vedanta which is a hybrid consists of many practices. The original Vedanta founded or unified by Adi Shankara, spoken of three yogas for moksha, Jnana Yoga, Bhakti yoga and Karma yoga, kuṇḍalinī yoga was viewed as secondary practices at best. The exact same argument comes up ag...

Re: Advaita Vedanta and Dzogchen

We don't have a self in Buddhism, you don't know that? Actually, if you study what Gautama Buddha said, there are some passages where he did not explicitly reject the idea of a self, but rather the question whether there is or is not a self based on the argument that the whole discussion around the...

That is what the tantras and commentaries state in theory, in that regard its rather similar to Vajrayogini teachings. But practically speaking, only a few are really that fast. Some masters took decades as stated in their biographies. Majority of us, well, bardo.... Maybe there is more to that &qu...

Phowa is never "secular" as it assumes a non-material, after-death existence - which is by definition a religious idea.

The question whether one should or should not do phowa for people who completely reject such an idea is an interesting one.

Re: Teacher-Student Consent

There are two kinds of problems: my problem and not my problem. Which is this for you? For me, this is not my problem at all. Life is short. Don't waste it on nonessentials. Now I had a good laugh, sometimes I get too caught up in the dynamics of sanghas out there. Thanks for the advice, and namaste.

I keep repeating my claim: Yes, there IS something very specific about Vajrayana that directly plays into continuation of abusive teacher/student relationships. It is the practice of guru yoga in the widest sense, including seeing the guru with pure perception. This does not exist as a practice in a...

Re: Teacher-Student Consent

That's not a correct characterization of the vajrayana. You will find many respected teachers, including HHDL, who say publicly that a student can and should leave an abusive teacher, and abusive teachers should be held responsible for their actions. There are various rationales for this, I'll prov...
