Re: Princeton Dictionary of Buddhism

By the way, isn't the Fo Guang Shan Dicitionary in the process of being translated into English? Do you mean the Fo Guang Buddhist Dictionary? If so, then no, not at this point at least. Though we are translating a 22 volume Illustrated Encyclopedia of Buddhist Arts, coming out this year 2014. ~~ H...

Re: Know Mind. Cultivate Mind: Buddhist Psychology

Hehe, thanks for that -- though I'm not going to watch it! haha!

I didn't know that they'd put it up on Youtube already.
This was at Hsi Lai Temple, Los Angeles, the Sunday before last.
This particular topic is something I've already done several times before, though.

Re: 2014 Fo Guang Buddhist Monastic Retreat

Here's a review of the program from 2010 by a good friend of mine, Justin W, in his Patheos blog, <American Buddhist Perspective> (a Montanan studying Buddhist studies in the U.K.). This is a great blog for a range of Buddhist related stuff, by the way. http://www.patheos.com/blogs/americanbuddhist/...

Good question. The main reason is that different age groups have different needs.

By going to the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha for refuge, and preferably taking the five precepts.

Pretty much the same way that one becomes any kind of Buddhist, that is, by going to the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha for refuge, and taking the five precepts.

 I mean by a subschool of religion not a pejorative like cult. Okay. But, defined in what terms? By school, do you mean that it's defined in terms of specific doctrines or teachings? Or in terms of particular practices? Though, either way, even in the same monastery people may have different...

Anybody want to address the issue of what is meant by "sect"?
I can't help but think that several of those listed above are not even in the same category.

Re: What is the Largest Buddhist Sect on Earth Today?

Has a census or poll ever been done within the Buddhist sangha of which sect has the most followers (or at least people self-identifying as a member of a subgrouping)? I am guessing it is a Mahayana school since China is one of the world's largest Buddhist countries and has the most biggest populat...

I'm hoping to finish it off over the (Taiwan) winter break, and have it published before June or so. If you would like to be a proof reader for a draft stage, please let me know. Though I'd prefer grad-level studies in this sort of thing, which I know, Jeeprs, you have.

Re: Princeton Dictionary of Buddhism

The idea that western academics of Buddhism are not practitioners may be a bit of a generalization and cliche, for a while it is definitely the case that not all of them are practicing Buddhists, a large number definitely have strong empathy and inclination toward a fair amount of Buddhist ideas.
