In Praise of Buddha

For Wesak 2020, a few verses from the end of Mahayanasutralamkara : 43. To you possessed of love for sentient beings, Who wish them to encounter and be free, Who wish them to never be deprived, And who wish for their benefit and happiness, I pay homage. 44. Capable One, definitively released from al...

Re: Dharma Gems

Using this Main Index link, one can follow Master Hua's life or any other serialized sutra, shastra or commentary thereon. Long before issue 482, there was an earlier set of biographical articles. How long after #482 the series continues, I do not know. http://www.drbachinese.org/vbs/publish/2001-20...

Re: Wisdom Abounds

Justice and injustice are an affair of the whole of life: compared with them, questions of health and disease are only about the parts. These last we might even cast aside as questions that do not concern that in us which is of most value; but by nature we hold to the distinction between the just a...

Re: Brill's Buddhism Encyclopedia

Depends on how much value you put on the academic approach. Only two thematic volumes of the six are out now. Not an "essential tool for anyone" to my mind. Brill’s Encyclopedia of Buddhism is the first comprehensive academic reference work devoted to the plurality of Buddhist traditions a...

Re: Daśabhūmika Sūtra

The bodhisattva develops the gentle mind, the harmonious mind, the capable mind, the mind imbued with goodness, the serene mind, the genuine mind, the unmixed mind, the unattached mind, the happy mind, and the magnanimous mind. Once he has acquired these ten kinds of minds, he succeeds in entering ...

Re: Dharma Gems

I should now dwell within the dharmas of the ten good karmic deeds and should also explain all good dharmas for beings' sakes, revealing for them the bases of right practice. And why should I proceed in this manner? It is because, if one were to fail to personally practice goodness himself and yet ...

The Books mention three classes of Bodhisattas namely: 1. Those in whom is a superabundance of Confidence (Saddhādhika). 2. Those in whom is a superabundance of Energy (Viriyadhika). 3. Those in whom is a superabundance of Wisdom (Paññādhika). Those Bodhisattas who are distinguished for wisdom are ...

Vajragarbha Bodhisattva, inspired by many buddhas, outlines the ten stages in the Ten Grounds Sutra . At the end of each stage He summarizes in verse. Here is a short excerpt from his summary of the first ground, the Ground of Joyfulness. The entire summary goes on for several pages more in English....

A divine nature is not absent from any thing, but is equally present to all things . Hence though you should assume the last of beings, in these also you will find divinity. For The One is every where; and in consequence of its absolute dominion, every thing receives its nature and coherence from t...
