Re: Dechan Jueren and Hanmi Buddhism

The guy calls himself a "Living Buddha". This has fraud written all over it. "Living buddha" is the same as "tulku". Oh. My bad. Living Buddha is translated differently in Chinese and Vietnamese. Whenever I hear Living Buddha, I always think of that "Living Buddha...

Re: Dharma Sangha

The obvious reason people are following him would be his many years of meditation starting at an early age. the BBC even did some time lapse photography of him meditating and the lack of motion was pretty remarkable. So that's his main credential, an outstanding history of meditation. However there...

Re: Tibetan Interest in EA Buddhism

Hi Namdrol, Apparently he did commit suicide from the sources that I've read. You have not read enough sources. Hashang went on to Dunhuang where he had a successful teaching career and wrote an alternate account of the debate. Also Nubchen Sangye Yeshe and the Padma Khatang report the opposite, na...

Re: Tibetan Interest in EA Buddhism

Remm, The thing with scholarship is similar to science, you should look at the latest developments and not at those that are 20 or 30 years old (that study you refer to, written by Jeffrey Broughton, was published in 1983 - but that in itself doesn't invalidate his study of course). For instance, a...

Hi Namdrol, Apparently he did commit suicide from the sources that I've read. "According to Pudon's account, the Chinese were unable to answer these charges and remained silent. The king declared that the position of the Indian gradualists was victorious and decreed that henceforth the teaching...

Re: Emptiness within Yogacara...

Astus, Also, "seeing nature" doesn't mean finding something existent or non-existent. Sorry, do you think you can elaborate on this? I'm not quite sure what you mean. According to the Śrī-mālādevī Siṃhanāda sūtra, the Tathāgatagarbha is void of all defilement stores, which are apart from k...

Re: Emptiness within Yogacara...

In the rope snake analogy, the object is the rope, the image in the mind is the snake. When image of a rope replaced the image of snake in the mind, you recognize the snake didn't come or go. It was always really the rope. This is comparing how objects appear in the mind generally. Everything appea...

Re: Tibetan Interest in EA Buddhism

"The attitudes of the Tibetan Lamas from the eleventh century until today toward Chan have been, by and large, exceedingly negative, except for certain Nyingmapas like Longchenpa and Urgyan Lingpa. The Tibetan Lamas are content with their Indian-derived traditions as representing the authentic...

Re: Emptiness within Yogacara...

Hmm...actually, a member here (Dexing) had written to me: It is like mistaking a rope for a snake. The rope is the basis for the imagined snake. If there was no rope, no imagination of a snake would arise. Emptiness in this sense refers to the non-being of the snake, which is merely the appearance o...

Emptiness within Yogacara...

Hello everyone, In regards to the notion of emptiness as expressed in the doctrines of Yogacara, once one is able to transform the basis (Āśrayaparāvṛtti) and cut off the imagined nature and bring about the Amalavijñāna (as expressed by Paramartha and Sthiramati), how does this 'immaculate mind' dif...

Re: Tibetan Interest in EA Buddhism

About the PL buddhists... I have a hard time accepting that the path can be reduced to the repetition of one text (or few) to gain rebirth in a Pure Land. Why not aiming a little higher and going for Enlightenment right now? Seems a bit defeatist and one doesn't even start to investigate this schoo...

Re: Why are there still suffering?

If Buddha was outside our minds, "he" would have already saved us. Do you agree? Can you rephrase the question or expand upon it? -M If what I have been taught is correct, that Buddha has boundless wisdom, compassion, and energy, and samsara is without beginning, and if Buddha was externa...

Re: Hsuan Hua in Europe?

None. But, sometimes they'll make a trip every now and then to propagate the Buddha dharma in Europe.
There are a lot of dedicated Vietnamese laypeople who venerate Master Hua in France. So, I think every now and then DM Heng You visits France.

Regarding a certain disciple of the Buddha

So, I vaguely heard about this story from a monk at my University recently. It was about one of Buddha's disciples who was fond of showing off his spiritual attainments to the laity. He would often fly around laymen and laywomen and make them gasp in awe at his powers. The Buddha who later found out...

Re: Should indiviuals be married and be monk?

I personally think this is a very uncalled, as well as extremely offensive, sweeping statement of Japanese priests! So are you saying that those of us ordained in the Japanese traditions like Eijo, myself and some of the others here are like that, and that our Dharma friends are also all like that?...

Re: Dharma Transmission Verses of the 42 Hands and Eyes

How fascinating. I wonder on what basis does the CTTB claim this to be restricted to them. Or is it just the translation they worry about but not the Chinese and other translations? CTTB is well aware of the other translations that are circulating around the web and in other monasteries, however, t...
