Re: Pure Land Death Stories

Then he returned to the northeastern part of Japan, where he taught his disciples. When he was getting very old, he told them a story he had heard in China. This is the story: ...
Re: Zen
 This is probably not what you mean by Zen "Coming up in conversations" but I'll tell the story anyhow. When I went to college, a long time ago now, I read a lot of Zen stories and Koans. I didn't know much about what I was reading then...but I liked them. Once I was waiting for a ...

 I just want to say that: 1. I am not a follower of Pure Land....not because I have any dislike for it....but just because I am basicaly ignorant about Pure Land...that is to say that I know almost nothing about it. 2. I am a follower of Zen...I prefer to say a STUDENT of Zen, rather th...

Re: Zen stories
This is another version of that Tea story. See my posting of the other story I posted for the site that all these stories come from. 1. A Cup of Tea Nan-in, a Japanese master during the Meiji era (1868-1912), received a university professor who came to inquire about Zen. The professor did not listen...

Re: Mara cannot possess righteous living
 That is fine, but there is one thing we must always be careful of, in my humble opinion. When we begain to attain some knowledge through our efforts we may become naturally proud of what we are achieving. We must not let that pride in our accomplishments trick us. That pride is the gat...

Re: Don't understand Zen
 A couple small but I think crucial points here. For example, sitting in Zazen merely as a meditation practice is (in my opinion) not going to make you a Buddha without some sort of Understanding first. In addition merely reading or study of Buddhist texts or even teaching parables and Koans ...

Re: The real truth behind Zen masters' self-mutilation?
 Many of those stories..whether they were actually true or not...are simply told to shock the student and by that propel hm or her into a state of mind where their preconceptions (illusions and delusions) are forgotten. Only then can a teacher reach down to the root of the student's (mis)unde...

Re: What should you do when you don't have a Zen teacher yet?
 I hear this all the time. I have to find a "teacher" to guide me! If I don't have a good teacher I will lose my way! I need help! In my opinion you don't NEED a teacher. You may WANT one. It may make things easier for you. It may give you the confidence to go further on and explor...
