Re: Buddhist teachers that teach a true self?
I do not believe that any authoritative Shin teacher teaches anything different from what I quoted or teaches a true self in the way it has been defined (essentially as an atman) Dude your own link YOU provided for Jodo Shinshu has True Self teachings in it also how can you say Rev. . John Paraskev...

Re: Buddhist teachers that teach a true self?
Actually iirc the Suzuki translation of Lankavatara specifically expounds that the Tathagatagarbha is, in fact, neither a self nor soul. In addition, belief in an Atman like thing is refuted at various points throughout the sutra in some detail. I have no idea how someone could read even the Suzuki...

Re: Buddhist teachers that teach a true self?
I think the Dali Lama in his book mentioned that Sakya master Rendawa taught True Self as well. Hahahahahhaha — Rendawa was the most staunch opponent of the Jonang School, his student was Tsongkhapa. Rendawa declared that gzhan stong was "outside the pale of Buddhism." hahahahahaha. I gue...

Re: Buddhist teachers that teach a true self?
Frankc please give a reference for your Dolpopa citations. But are we now agreed that Shin, etc. do not teach a self? Jodo Shinshu does teach True Self. Shinran shonins second most quoted Sutra in his kyogyoshinsho is the Nirvana Sutra, you can find the True Self teaching in his foundational works ...

Re: Why Daisaku Ikeda he is suffering?
According rumors the President Ikeda four years ago he had a stroke. Is true? Do you think may be the effect of his offenses (onshitsu) against Nikken shonin? But if the Soka Gakkai is emerged victorious from the dispute religious with the Nichiren Shoshu, Why the president Ikeda he is suffering? M...

Re: Buddhist teachers that teach a true self?
This may strike you as a naive question, but just to be clear: when you refer to a true self you are referring to the common Buddhist use of the term to refer to the unconditoned and empty "self" and not to the idea of a permanent soul or self as it is commonly understood in many non-Budd...

Re: Buddhist teachers that teach a true self?
Can anyone refer me to any material from Lamas that refer to a true self in their teachings. I've heard Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche talking about it. Anyone else? You looking for info just on Tibetan teachers or all Mahayana Buddhist teachers who teach True Self? A good place to start is Lama Dolpopa a...

Re: Supporting veterans and war
That said, I've found that Buddhists in my circles are pretty shitty to veterans. Self-righteous Buddhists who have been pacifists, most if not all of their lives, looking down on vet Buddhists because--- they killed . It's pretty horrifying to see your dharma sister, who is some 20-something vegan...

Re: Nichiren vs Pure Land
Looking on the texts of Soka Gekkai I found such quote NEMBUTSU is a practice that leads to the hell of incessant suffering. The Lotus Sutra is the direct road that leads to Buddhahood and the attainment of the way. As soon as possible one should therefore abandon the Pure Land school, embrace the ...

Re: Universal Atman in Buddhism
Zengen I think it depends on how people interpret "inherent enlightenment". The wrong interpretation is to cling to the term "inherent enlightenment" and wrongly use the term as an excuse to mean that we don't need to practice the path to remove the veil of defilement, which con...

Re: Universal Atman in Buddhism
oh my bad, I thought he just misspelled Srimala  . of course the next question that begs is why he would think a Dzogchen master's writings would be considered to be an authority on anything to me. Well, there is this, from your favorite sūtra: The tathāgatagarbha is the tathāgatas' wisdom ...

Re: Universal Atman in Buddhism
Now, if someone is going to assert the tathātagarbha is a self, they will also have to assert that the mind (citta) is a self. Then they will find themselves on a very slippery slope. But if, on the other hand, they assert merely that innate purity of the mind is all that is intended by tathāgataga...

Re: Universal Atman in Buddhism
There is no school in Buddhism that states sentient beings are inherently awakened... sure, they may state that we possess an innately unconditioned nature... but that is something different than awakening or enlightenment [bodhi]. The Awakening of Faith in Mahayana 大乘起信論 states that all sentient b...

Re: Universal Atman in Buddhism
As I have cited before Śrī Siṃha is very clear about this idea of 'primordial buddhahood' or 'inherent enlightenment' being a misunderstanding, and you should make sure you are VERY clear on this, otherwise you will compromise your chances of buddhahood altogether: This is acceptable since a so cal...

Re: Universal Atman in Buddhism
Also the idea that tathāgatagarbha is full-fledged buddhahood is contradicted by this passage: The seed existing in oneself that turns into buddhahood is called "tathāgatgarbha," the buddhahood which one will obtain. Again one sentence with no context. This is only in reference to inheren...

Re: Universal Atman in Buddhism
Nirvana Sutra: The Self is true [satya], real [tattva], eternal [nitya], sovereign/ autonomous/ self-governing [aisvarya], and whose ground/ foundation is unchanging [asraya-aviparinama], is termed ‘the Self’ [atman]. This is as in the case of the great Doctor who well understands the milk medicine...
