No news either way on a Vol 2, but wanted to offer this video of Gerardo briefly discussing Vol 1.

Re: Difference between Samskaras and Vasanas
Seems to me that they are synonyms. Possibly, but the two terms do seem to point to different aspects of a single process. At least from what I can understand regarding the root meanings of the words. In the context of yogacara and the alaya-vijana, there is this quote that seems to show the compli...

From the Princeton Dictionary of Buddhism (I've added paragraph formatting), saṃskāra . (P. saṅkhāra; T. ’du by ed; C. xing; J. gy ō; K. haeng 行). In Sanskrit, a polysemous term that is variously translated as “formation,” “volition,” “volitional action,” “conditioned,” “conditioning factors.” In i...

Re: Zen and patriotism
Is Zen Buddhism compatible with patriotism: after all, in the Buddhism context, patriotism is only a kind of affection? P.S. Did Zen Buddhists participate in the Second World War? One of the more interesting stories I know about Buddhism and patriotism comes from an introduction to the book, The Mi...

Re: Piercing the empty sky
It brings to mind also a famous anecdote in Japanese Zen, when Kusunoki Masashige (14th century warrior) went to visit his Zen teacher Gokushu right before a decisive battle. He asked, "How should I stand between life and death?" Gokushun replied, "Cut off two heads [i.e. dualism], a...

Piercing the empty sky
I enjoy periodically rereading a book within the Tibetan Buddhist tradition called, The Hundred Verses of Advice . It's a collection of pith instruction verses by Padampa Sangye with commentary by Dilgo Khyense Rinpoche. I was reading verse 51 yesterday and happened to recall an anecdote about Linji...

New translation of Shabkar's, The Emanated Scripture of Manjushri
A new book has recently been released. It is a translation of Shabkar’s The Emanated Scripture of Manjushri . The translator is Sean Price . From the book blurb, Composed by Shabkar at the Cave of Miracles close to Mount Kailash around 1815, this compendium of spiritual instructions is written in th...

This Buddhist Life – Oshin Liam Jennings
Nice article about a deaf Zen priest and connecting the Dharma to the differently abled: https://tricycle.org/magazine/oshin-liam-jennings/. From the article: How has being deaf shaped your experience of receiving and transmitting the dharma? I have to say first that it was an obstacle. Zen is very ...

Re: Is there a sign language equivalent to NMRK?
If there isn't one, one should just be made. Something that can be repeated without causing carpal tunnel syndrome. The ASL for nirvana is far out, man. For what it's worth, there is a nice Tricycle article on the life of that deaf Zen priest, Oshin Liam Jennings, who is signing Nirvana: This Buddh...

Re: Is there a sign language equivalent to NMRK?
Thanks for the video, anjali! I really like that as well. I'll pass that along. And thank you for the site with the mudras, narhwal90! This is all very helpful. Still haven't been able to find any signing for NMRK. Thinking about it a bit more, though, it occurred to me that someone could probably ...

As Queequeg says, set boundaries. If they regularly come over every week, start by giving them a call (or send an email if you communicate with them that way), and say: you need a week off to do studies and get some rest, and would appreciate it if they didn't come over for a week. If you are willin...

realtime global birth & death simulator
https://worldbirthsanddeaths.com/ Interesting simulator. It is possible to show/hide 3 aspects: location, births, and deaths. Watching only the deaths is sobering. "As the sun sets in the evening, the lengthening shadows of the western hills draw ever nearer until they engulf us in the twilight...

Re: Mind essence introduced in advaita and TB
While not everyone's cup of tea, this video on RM's teachings may be worth watching for those interested in such things: Jnani. There is a discussion of mind essence from the Advaita perspective. David Godman's comments are the highlight of the video, in my opinion.
