Re: Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo & Lama Tsultrim Allione: Shambhala's Sakyong Mipham

I don’t think so. What is paramount is the teacher-student relationship. The vajrayana was originally a personal and secret practice. You don’t need to be part of any community to practice. On the contrary, participation in a community probably increases the opportunities for breaching samaya. Yes ...

Re: Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo & Lama Tsultrim Allione: Shambhala's Sakyong Mipham

But it seems to me that I am being given authority to do a practice myself and I know it is very popular (encouraged even) to hang around lamas basking in the ambience - for me I have no inclination to do so. I avoid dharma centres and only go for specific teachings every few years or so. I'm not s...

Re: How to start a personal retreat?

Kongtrul's retreat manual won't give you the specifics for preparing, though it's very good to read it for advice regarding motivation, etc. One of my favorite books, but it mainly explains what practices were done, and not so much how to conduct them....mostly. Based on the instructions I've been g...

Or, practice—4-6:30am, work 8-5, practice again 7:30-9....and push re-set button. Weekends, do more practice, and sometimes use PTO or vacation days for strict retreats of 4 or more sessions daily. Is there any hope for one with a full time job and a family such as myself? :D I guess in this case p...

Re: Tummo and Tsa Lung Meditation

Vajra Recitation, which is normally associated with the three syllables, is somewhat of a precursor in some ways to Tummo, but it's also a stand-alone practice depending on the system one is practicing. (Dorje Daypa in Tibetan).

You need to identify which empowerment you received form the source, or from someone close to the source, to know for sure.

Re: Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo & Lama Tsultrim Allione: Shambhala's Sakyong Mipham

Just to be clear, l personally am of the opinion that a student/teacher relationship that bears the fruit of recognition on the part of the student can and does occur, even if that teacher has been found to be “non-virtuous” or worse...and I am not one for blinders. Truly, one’s recognition cannot c...

Re: Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo & Lama Tsultrim Allione: Shambhala's Sakyong Mipham

What I am doing is saying that the present dramas do not invalidate the principle of Guru Yoga. This is absolutely irrelevant. What does Guruyoga have to do with this matter. It has a lot to do with it. Imagine that the Lama you feel introduced you to the nature of mind is suddenly called an abuser...

Re: A question on malas

Those "mala Counters" move of their own accord, sometimes. They're useful if you're engaged in long recitation sessions, but I write down counts daily, after sessions, as do some of my teachers--I know this first-hand. If you're engaged in accumulation, it is good to have a private written record. W...

Re: Different criteria. Why?

"it's about emotions. in sutrayana, theravada tradition and the different mahayana schools, the method is renouncing negative emotions because they are considered poisons to our self. By abandoning, renouncing, negative emotions one stops producing negative karma. So one renounces everything that c...

Re: Tummo and Tsa Lung Meditation

Well....as you've noticed, some feel they should be restricted, while others publish instructions available to the general public. Each lineage has it's own perspective, and also it's own tradition....although the general idea of "Tummo" is similar for all lineages, the specifics of the practice dif...

Buddhist teacher quit Shambhala in ‘protest’ before his own sexual misconduct allegation went public Not at all surprising. Having met Rinzler I have always been shocked that he is considered a teacher and has been able to get published. The vetting process for "teachers" in Shambhala is absurdly v...

Actually I did know that Simon. I went to school in Scotland for a term or two, back in the day. The Scots were definitely, and defiantly, not English. And, as an Aussie, I have at least some understanding of the roundball game now, by dint of having brought up two sons who both started in Under Si...

Re: Leslie Hays says Akong R kidnapped and tortured SMR

I honestly finda that hard to believe. This is bit too much. But still shows how f-ing messy the whole situation is. Kinda reminded me of a passage where Dianna says Akong R. bullied her and CTR when they still were in Samye-ling. But still really? This is a horrible mess. I knew Akong Rinpoche for...

That reminds me of a joke I told years ago, while on retreat, after several days of practice..

"Knock knock"
"Who's there?"
"Hiya!"
"Hiya who?"

"Hayagriva!"

Yeah, I was sleep deprived.

Re: Meaning of Kamtsang

"Tsang" (Tshang) means something like "family" and "Kam" is understood as the first initial of Karmapa. So we could say Kamtsang refers to those in the "family of Karmapa," and the title "Karma Kagyu" is pretty much synonymous. In terms of lineage, this refers to the successive Karmapas and their he...
