The Rinzai Zen Way: A Guide to Practice
The Rinzai Zen Way: A Guide to Practice
Friends,
I'm very pleased to announce that my book The Rinzai Zen Way: A Guide to Practice is currently in production with Shambhala Publications, and expected to be available in February or March 2018. Shambhala distributes through Penguin Random House, so this should be available in all the usual places one finds books these days.
I wrote the book originally for folks in my community, since there are comparatively few works pertaining to Rinzai Zen practice out there. Naturally the primary "guide to practice" is oral instruction from one's teacher. However, these days I'm often contacted by distant folks who haven't yet found a teacher, but might in the meantime benefit from starting to practice in some way. So the intent of the work has broadened over time, and I hope it will be useful especially for people in that situation. The book contains instruction for a number of things that are safe to begin on one's own, along with photographs detailing body usage.
I'll post updates here in the future.
Finally, I'd like to thank everyone here at DW. Discussion with you folks over the years provided some of the seeds for this book, and I'm deeply grateful for that.

An invaluable resource, I'm sure. I will certainly be getting a copy and will also order one for the Buddhist Library here when it is published.

Nice! Does it come with a stick where you can hit yourself?
One should not kill any living being, nor cause it to be killed, nor should one incite any other to kill. Do never injure any being, whether strong or weak, in this entire universe!

Thank you for the kind words, all.

In a small number of cases, turning it spine up and aiming between one's eyes may help. But neither publisher nor author will be held responsible for such use.seeker242 wrote:Does it come with a stick where you can hit yourself?

Its age of Internet and oral teachings are outdated. I am so thirsdy for books filled with practice and guides instead of dry blocks of pointless text.
Looking forward to get this one on my kindle

Hoping this will be neither dry nor pointless. Someone not interested to practice may find much of it uninteresting.Nyantron wrote:Its age of Internet and oral teachings are outdated. I am so thirsdy for books filled with practice and guides instead of dry blocks of pointless text.

Still on schedule for Feb/March 2018 availability, more updates soon...

Re: The Rinzai Zen Way: A Guide to Practice
Congrats on the new book Meido.
I am happy to see a book on the practice of Rinzai Zen.
Beside the Omori Sogen's - Introduction To Zen Training, I am not aware of another book of the Rinzai Way.
I have pre-ordered the book via Amazon smile and wish you this one to be the first of many in future.
Also congratulations on opening ( finishing with the completion ) of the Korinji Monastery.

Re: The Rinzai Zen Way: A Guide to Practice
Thank you, Victor, I appreciate it.
Omori Roshi's book (which was translated into English by his student, and one of my teachers, Hosokawa Roshi) is really an important work; I recommend it to everyone interested in Rinzai practice. Luckily still in print, and reasonably priced in paperback.
I couldn't write anything matching that, but just tried to write something more simple for beginners and including some more actual practice details. Hopefully someone finds it helpful.
