Here is a movie about Zen master Dogen's life (you need to switch on the English subtitles)

I'm sure that the movie has its problems, but I found it quite beautiful and inspiring. Maybe it will inspire other people, too. :namaste:

Here it is with English & Chinese subtitles:
but parts in the beginning are also spoken in Chinese. Did Dogen speak both languages?

Indeed it is a great film. However, the Chinese at the beginning is quite difficult to watch. I can speak a bit of Mandarin and let me put it this way- I needed subtitles to understand a lot of it :-P. And technically speaking, spoken Chinese at the time would be closer to Modern Cantonese. Nevertheless, excellent movie!

Not sure how well Dogen spoke Chinese, but to the best of my understanding, he was able to communicate freely with Chinese people who had no Japanese language. I don't know the extent to which this was mediated through the written word.

Dogen did train in China and I can't imagine they taught him in Japanese.

Like many other Japanese masters who trained in China, it's highly likely he used the written language as his primary means of communication. Written Chinese has always been the lingua franca, the Latin of the East if you will.

The part with the shogun and the moon had given me a serious moment of clarity/click. It was at a specific moment of the shogun, his blade, moon's reflection, zazen and impending death. The moment I experienced was like this.. :jawdrop: :o  My attachments became illuminated and the understanding of what they create opened up a lot.

the shogun, the moon, the blade, zazen, no death...no death, no fear
