Not sure how well Dogen spoke Chinese, but to the best of my understanding, he was able to communicate freely with Chinese people who had no Japanese language. The part with the shogun and the moon had given me a serious moment of clarity/click. It was at a specific moment of the shogun, his blade, moon's reflection, zazen and impending death.
