Chanting and zazen

Post by doublerepukken »

Hello all,

Just wondering if it's ok to do some chanting like the heart sutra mantra in addition to zazen. I used to chant specifically to calm myself down on breaks because my job is extremely stressful and prone to people screaming at me (customer service call center). Is this advisable/ok? I'm kinda going out of my way to make sure I'm practicing correctly. Also, is chanting in general ok, like the heart sutra etc? I rather enjoy it.

Thank you :buddha1:

Excuse me for answering in the Soto forum, but I don't think anyone will disagree: in general it is very ok to chant any of the common texts.

If you specifically want to calm down, you might chant this (in the Sino-Japanese):

As a side note the translation has a eternalist slant to it in places .Is that an accurate translation ?
