I don't know if this is the right place to ask or not, but What does Buddha's hat represent in Buddha statues? I'm assuming its a hat and not hair. I've noticed in some statues its more rounded almost like an acorn and in others it sticks up pretty high and pointy like a pine cone (one obvious reason I think its a hat not hair). The other being references to shaving the head in the suttas.
To the physical eye the ushnisha does look like a flesh lump, but others can see above it a flame. Many Theravadin, Thais, for example show the flame clearly in images.
