Disappearing posts (in non-controversial threads)?

Post by sillyrabbit » Thu Aug 25, 2016 9:01 pm

I'm having a hard time following a conversation like this one:

http://www.dharmawheel.net/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=23488

In which I can see posts being quoted, but not the posts themselves. In the above link (page 1), I cannot see posts from 'davidbrainerd', 'Alex McLeod', and at least one of 'vinegar''s quoted posts. There's no mod message indication a thread clean-up had taken place, and the posts quoted don't seem too controversial...

Is anyone else experiencing this?

This was actually quite jarring for me because I have attention issues (diagnosed), and I kept scrolling up thinking I missed something, and by the time I figure out the post isn't there, I've lost the train of thought I had that was running in parallel while reading the actual conversation.

Could have been split from another thread.

Whatever the case though, when posts violate the ToS, they get removed. Usually mods try to remove both the quoted parts and the originals when this is the case, but sometimes that actually makes continuity worse, rather than better.

Well, it's better to ruin the forum than to allow a dissonant voice be heard. Right?

Might happen on occasion, no one is perfect, but nine times out of ten they get removed for the reasons already mentioned. Big difference between dissonant voice, and someone who keeps repeating the same flawed argument, or even moreso is resorting to ad-homs to prove their point.

Looks like it was just either a poor job of thread clean up or a split from another thread. I'll take a look at it. Sometimes clean up gets complicated by the delay for posting. This delay seems to be much improved, so hopefully these type of incidents will decrease.

We're fine with dissonant posters until they start bashing core Mahayana tenets (at least outside of the Open Dharma Subforum). This is explicitly spelled out in the Terms of Service. If someone doesn't wish to play by these rules, then they really won't enjoy this place, because the rules are going to be enforced regardless.

EDIT: People who essentially bypass the mechanisms for banning have done a lot more to destroy the integrity of the forum than any overreacting to dissonant/disruptive posters.

I see. I guess I was expecting some kind of mod message if there was any clean up due to ToS violations, so I thought the missing posts could've been caused by something else.

There usually is, but it's impossible to note every action made, so usually if a thread is effected a mod posts what they did at the end, or if it's an edit, then you see it in the post.

Do you mean the giant post with a mess up of the quotes by "Kim"? He asked how to fix it, and I sent the text to him with an explanation how to fix quotes. I believe, s/he is working on it now and we can read it later after reposting.

They're talking about posts from davidbrainerd, who's posts were removed, but people quoting him have posts that remain. I haven't had a chance to go through and clean that one up again. Would you mind handling it?

I'm sorry. My "cleaning" seems to have been a little chaotic.

In general: if people wouldn't complain and everybody would love those "dissonant voices", mods would love to keep those threads untouched.
But I don't think, a Buddhist board Is committed to let single persons (who are in a bad mood only) put down the teachings of Dharma. Why not ask, why not try to understand?

So, that thread was very controversial and we received reports on it. The posts were removed for trolling.

I'm very sorry to have caused this confusion. Excuse me.
Feel free to ask me directly via PM, if any threads are disturbing for you again.

No worries :) Now that I know these things can happen here, I can keep that in mind next time.

I didn't even think about the possibility of those posts being reported *facepalm*.

Thanks for clearing that up, everyone.
