Kosa Reading Group: General Introduction

Post by Queequeg »

Having paid homage to the one who permanently destroys darkness in all,
who leads migrating beings from the morass of samsara,
and teaches the meaning just as it is,
I shall read the treatise on Abhidharma
for the purpose of attaining buddhahood
and placing all beings on that sublime stage.

Thank you to Acharya Malcolm Smith for the above invocation.

We are embarking on reading the Abhidharmakosabhasyam composed by Ven. Vasubandhu together. We don't know how long this will take, but let's all generate the resolve to see it through, encouraging each other along the way to the finish.

Each section will have its own thread. We are seeing about setting up a separate sub-forum for this reading but for now, we will have it here in the Discovering Mahayana section.

Please take note, all comments will be moderated, so they will not appear immediately.

The first reading we are aiming to complete by June 14, 2020, is as follows:

The General Introduction, verses 1-3. In the Pruden translation this is pp. 55-58.

Optional reading: Poussin's introduction to the text; of course, nothing stops you from reading on - Greg has suggested reading through the discussion of Dharmas, verse 4-7, pp. 58-62 in Pruden.

Let's pick up this thread on Sunday. Greg will start us on the discussion.
Those who, even with distracted minds,
Entered a stupa compound
And chanted but once, “Namo Buddhaya!”
Have certainly attained the path of the buddhas.

-Lotus Sutra, Expedient Means Chapter

There are beings with little dust in their eyes who are falling away because they do not hear the Dhamma. There will be those who will understand the Dhamma.
