the most surprising thing you got from Buddhism?

Post by Luke » Sun Jun 01, 2014 7:29 pm

What is the most surprising thing you have gotten from practicing Buddhism?

For me, it's beer! lol

Drinking beer is not a stereotypically Buddhist activity, but many times, I have ended up in situations in which sangha members (both in Tibetan and Zen groups) offered me lots of free beer even when I wasn't seeking after it. The amount of free beer I have gotten from fellow Buddhists is really quite surprising. lol

So anyway, those of you who are trying to avoid all alcohol, don't assume that all Buddhist groups are alcohol-free and be mentally prepared for these situations.

Funny, I got sobriety. And also some sanity and even a good bit of happiness. Having read Milarepa as a young man that is completely surprising to me. I wish I'd never read that book. It put an incredible number of unnecessary obstacles into my path.

My relationship with my wife has improved dramatically. This, in spite of her being very committed to her Christian faith. It has been an interesting couple of years, I assure you.

For me when I was with a Sangha, wine!

Seriously, my relationship with myself and my husband has improved but also with my children. They are grown now and have kids of their own and I can help out when needed. I am making less messes when helping out! I think it's because I've backed off and just let most things be as they are. When something comes up that needs to be addressed I do so without as much heat. So maybe it's less drama in my life, so much more clear space to see things...But that may have happened anyway with old age. I have become very picky who I hangout with because I don't have the energy I had when I was younger.

More awareness of my body and its needs.
Beginning every session of sitting meditation with a few minutes of body scanning, as I was taught in a group I joined a few years ago, helped with that and mindfulness during daily life reinforced it. I am now much more conscious of whether or not I am sitting well, whether my shoulders are tight with unnecessary tension, whether I am physically lethargic or not. And I have taken on more regular activities which give me more exercise (not hard, since I was doing almost none before  ).

Ditto--but I'd never have said it first. People think I'm enough of a troll around here as it is.

Same here.

I would also say the most surprising thing for me was that this shy, unlovable, depressed, cold and aloof introvert could feel love for a stranger, let alone an enemy, let alone this suffering right here.
