How do you overcome anger and hate?

Post by joy&peace »

Love alone overcomes hate.

It may seem difficult - and if people continually attack each other -- it may appear difficult . . .

Yet have faith - because truth, Dharma, Law, kindness, and peace always win out.

Peace is power - indeed. Those without power try to tell others they have no power,

Etc. - and the rest.

Peace and love,

How to overcome anger and hate? Fight them with peace?

Better to pay them no attention. Deny them existence.

It is more like pouring water on fire; it certainly is effective. Or dirt on fire, anything like that.

Fires can be put out -- wisdom and skill are very useful.

The analogy of water overcoming fire does not accurately describe how anger and hate are eased in the presence of love and peace. Love does not combat hate, because love by its nature is non-combative. It does however deny hate its power just as it denies itself power. Love accepts, absorbs and accommodates.

I think it's important to remember the power in Buddhist practice is 'seeing how things are'. Basically that is mindfulness: when you perceive anger and hate as they really are, then you realise their corrosive and harmful nature (suffering), the fact that they're momentary and will soon pass (anicca) and that they are not really yourself (anatta). Once you start to see that, they loose their hold. Doesn't mean that you're not human with human feelings, like anyone else, but it does mean you're less likely to get caught up in the torrent of emotions and to get subject to all those negative forces.

So, 'Joy and Peace' do we assume from your post above that you are ' infinitely free '? And is that the same as being Enlightened in the Buddhist sense ?

Simon, when we are able to establish mutual respect and trust, I will be happy to discuss anything with you. The event of you creating threads on other boards to criticize me and bad-mouth me, for no seeming legitimate reason, seems to preclude this at present.

Recently I wished to ask you - are you still doing so? Simple and straightforward answer would be greatly appreciated.

I do not believe you have answered any other question I have asked you; yet this one I wished to ask, as well as clarify that a simple and straightforward answer will be greatly appreciated.

With trust, respect, and friendship,
Jake

Many good wishes to you - always.

Karma Dondrup, I'll be happy to share more on this sometime soon.

Peace and love,

So ' infinite 'freedom ' is actually relative then. It depends on who is asking. Ok.

This is not appropriate, nor Right Discussion.

When one member asks another, are you still criticizing me on other boards - and asks for a simple and straightforward answer -

etc.

I believe it is disharmonious to the site as a whole; to treat other Dharma members this way, as well.

As - though it does not affect me negatively; others may pick up such patterns of speech - once again, this reflects the entire Buddhist community; when anyone sees Buddhists talking to each other, they make impressions about Buddhists in general -

As it is clear and simple, that all actions, all words affect all the rest --

Etc.

Peace.

May all beings be well, healthy, and at peace... Most of all, may all beings be happy.

Namaste and peace,

i am glad it does not affect you negatively. I would hate to compromise your infinite freedom.

When we lose our temple and get angry we always regret later. What's the different or why ? Well time is, only if we give ourselves time to think it over.

We cannot change time but we can. How ? Being calm, STILL and FOCUS living in the "now" moment.

How to attain that sort of state of bliss, focus and stillness ?

Meditate/focus more not only in sitting but irl ..... :P

Stillness is not something to be attained.
It is here right now.
How to find it?
Stop, and listen.
Then continue on your way.

Look at the coin on the table you can't focus your look and be still for even 5 seconds, come back once you can be still for 10 seconds. Meanwhile .....

But can you be still at the instant the inbreath becomes the outbreath?

If so, there it is, an eternity in a moment.

What about the next breath..?

A very good step-by-step means of overcoming hatred is laid out in Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche's "Awakening the Luminous Mind", especially if your emotion is often directed at the same target again and again. If you are willing to put in the practice time it recommends and not just read the book for entertainment, it can take you a long way.

Actually, that's true of any recommendation people on this board could make. The Buddhist tradition is full of skillful means for dealing with negative emotions, and you can choose the one that seems appropriate for you, but you have to be not only willing but determined to actually sit with the problem and work on it, alone, for as long as it takes. It's a matter of reconditioning yourself. There is no magic bullet.

Yes, till every breath you take. Till one is in Nirvana even when not in meditative stance... and that's just a small part of progress only a basic skill of The Way/ The Path. To manifest something we need to will it, to will it one needs to focus one thought continuous non stop. We can't easily do it, in this realm the mind is fleeting because the atom is fleeting all is but illusion.

When we're in Samadhi our breath is slow, long, mild and we're calm. In fact it's all about stillness. There's a saying "Be still and know.."
