Zi Gong [a disciple] asked: "Is there any one word that could guide a person throughout life?"
The Master replied: "How about 'reciprocity'! Never impose on others what you would not choose for yourself."
Confucius, Analects XV.24, tr. David Hinton
The antidote—to be free from the suffering of samsara—you need to be free from delusion and karma; you need to be free from ignorance, the root of samsara. So you need to meditate on emptiness. That is what you need. Lama Zopa Rinpoche

The supreme aim of all religions is to teach men how to live; and the learning and the living are religion itself. The purification of the human heart, the building up of a blameless life, and the perfecting of the soul, these are the great underlying and enduring factors in all religions and creeds the world over. That which is vital in every religion is the striving after, and the practice of, Goodness; all things else are accretions, superfluities, illusions. Goodness — and by Goodness I mean sinlessness — is the beautiful and imperishable form of Religion, but creeds and religions are the perishable garments, woven of the threads of opinion, in which men clothe it. One after another religions come and go, but Religion, being Life itself, endures forever. Let men cease to quarrel over the garments and strive to perceive the universality and beauty of the indwelling form; thus will they become wedded to it, will become one with the supreme Goodness. Religion is Goodness; Goodness is Religion.

By relying on me [Buddha] as their
spiritual friend, sentient beings subject to birth will be
completely released from being subject to birth, and sentient
beings subject to aging, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation,
suffering, distress, and agitation will be completely released
from being subject to aging, sickness, death, sorrow,
lamentation, suffering, distress, and agitation.

Therefore, Ananda, you should understand in the following
way alone: A virtuous spiritual friend, a virtuous companion, a
virtuous support is the whole, the unadulterated, the complete,
the pure, the totally purified holy life, but a non-virtuous
spiritual friend, a non-virtuous companion, a non-virtuous
support is not. Ananda, you should train thinking in this way.

Valor, cleanness of heart, steadfast union with illumination, generous giving, control, sacrifice, study, fervor, righteousness,
Gentleness, truth, freedom from anger, detachment, peace, loyalty, pity for all beings, an unlascivious mind, mildness, modesty, steadfastness,
Fire, patience, firmness, purity, good-will, absence of conceit, these belong to him who is born to the godlike portion!
Hypocrisy, pride, vanity, anger, meanness, unwisdom, these are his, who is born to the demoniac portion. The godlike portion makes for liberation, and the demoniac for bondage.

From when i was a child:

Patience is a virtue, and
Virtue is its own reward

So we should all sit around -
and wait.

This is what should be done
By one who is skilled in goodness,
And who knows the path of peace:
Let them be able and upright,
Straightforward and gentle in speech,
Humble and not conceited,
Contented and easily satisfied,
Unburdened with duties and frugal in their ways.
Peaceful and calm and wise and skillful,
Not proud or demanding in nature.
Let them not do the slightest thing
That the wise would later reprove.
Wishing: In gladness and in safety,
May all beings be at ease.

Once real virtue, manhood, the courage and responsibility of free men, are extinguished in a society, presently security evaporates, too; but that is the lesser loss. There is something better than to know what it is to be guaranteed and protected and pensioned. The better state is to know what it is to be a man.

To be angry about trifles is mean and childish; to rage and be furious is brutish; and to maintain perpetual wrath is akin to the practice and temper of devils; but to prevent and suppress rising resentment is wise and glorious, is manly and divine.

Our eating, trading, marrying, and learning are mistaken by us for ends and realities,
whilst they are properly symbols only; when we have come, by a divine leading, into
the inner firmament, we are apprised of the unreality or representative character of
what we esteemed final.
