USA Total Solar Eclipses

Post by Nicholas Weeks »

First one on 21 August 2017 where the shadow of totality runs from Oregon SE and exits in SC. Been 100 years since the path has covered all lower 48. NASA will cover it online:

If one misses the 2017 event, just wait seven years, another total solar event in 8 April 2024. The shadow runs thru central Mexico, then sweeps NE across Texas, exiting the US in Maine.

If you have not yet made travel plans to see the total eclipse, it is likely way too late to get reservations. Many places along the path were booked solid a year ago. I will be patiently waiting for 2024.

Solar eclipses magnify karma, good or bad, so during the five or so hours that the shadow passes over the USA, I suspect being on our best behavior is a minimum need.

Whether there are specific sadhanas for such time I do not know; but be good bodhisattvas - no backsliding then.

Yes, thanks, that is a good suggestion.

Any sadhana is better than doing nothing or having a drunken eclipse party.

A fascinating article (with an equally so video) on this USA eclipse being useful in correcting the assumed diameter of the sun. It is a little bigger than thought. That affects the size of the totality shadow also.

If there are any other sadhanas focused on solar eclipses in particular, feel free to mention them.

National Geographic published an article a few years ago on, Solar Eclipse Myths from Around the World. I particularly liked this one,
"My favorite myth is from the Batammaliba people in Togo and Benin" in Africa, said Holbrook.

In this myth, the sun and the moon are fighting during an eclipse, she said. The people "encourage the sun and the moon to stop fighting."

"They see it as a time of coming together and resolving old feuds and anger," Holbrook said. "It's a myth that has held to this day."

I thought Lama Zopa would have some good sadhana suggestions, here they are:

Just watching on TV at home. The three channels covering it best are Science, NASA on CSpan1 & Weather channel. The first two are educational with less attention to the spectacle. Weather Channel has reactions from folks watching it live, plus a near constant view of the partial & total eclipse. One of their locales is in Madras, OR where totality is coming soon; then they will switch to Jackson Hole, WY, then Carbondale, IL, next will be Nashville, TN and finally somewhere is S. Carolina.

The thread seems incomplete without a picture. This was taken at maximum eclipse here in Nova Scotia, about 50% coverage.

Right Kathy! For even more videos here is nearly four hours of NASA via CSPAN1:

Also the Weather Channel site has a section on the event.

I should consider myself lucky to have just moved to Oregon before the eclipse. I don't live close enough to where the path of totality crossed...so I decided to make a pilgrimage out of it to see it in full action. As a new moon, the eclipse was an observance day anyway.

http://imgur.com/a/aIPY6

The entire trip was on foot and took more or less 12 hours to get to make it to the path of totality. 28 miles total. The eclipse itself was unforgettable. It was as if time stood still for a few brief moments. Just after totality, a rainbow halo flashed against the moon's disk. It was the most faith-affirming experiences I've ever had the pleasure to witness.
