Space Force!

Prediction:

Everybody gets a ray gun!!! pew pew!!

“Come in, Star Commander, I think I detect space junk.”

This will inevitably become a joke that breaks his re-election chances. By far the silliest idea ever.

Is it silly for China to have a space force?
Or only silly for trump?

"Spanky and his Space Cadets"
:alien:
Just think of the resultant endless stream of insanely lucrative R&D contracts flowing into the ravenous gaping maw of the military-industrial complex. For example, consider the estimated (and almost certainly low-balled) $406 billion they've spent just on the F-35, a state-of-the-art, ultra-modern, space-age fighter that can barely fly and is arguably less reliable and combat-ready than the P-51. Meanwhile, 1.6 million children in America are homeless, 16.4 million American children live in poverty, and over half of America lives paycheck to paycheck, one unexpected car repair or medical bill from destitution, while our empire (the world's largest arms dealer) spends $610 billion a year on industrialized death, 34% of the world's total military expenditure, which is more than the next seven largest militaries combined.
The DoD's budget for next year; $717 billion.

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms in not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children...This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron."

I don't find the weaponization of space humorous.

It's probably going to happen fairly soon. There have been several theoretical programs to develop a kinetic bombardment weapon, which is not prohibited by any treaty. The concept is beautifully simple: you drop a object from orbit, ideally something hard and high-density (tungsten was a preferred option). Because it's entering the atmosphere at a narrow angle and travelling very fast, it's almost impossible to intercept, and because it doesn't require launching or flying anything that terrestrial radar could pick up, there's very little early warning of an incoming attack. It accumulates kinetic energy as it falls and generates the same explosive yield as a medium-sized nuclear weapon, minus the radiation and other inconveniences such as being classified as a WMD. The only bottleneck was that getting a large, heavy object into orbit would be very expensive, and it wasn't a particularly easy weapon to test inconspicuously.

Of course you could just put an actual WMD in orbit and use that instead. The Soviet Union planned to do that with the Almaz space station, but claim they never actually did. But they did deploy defensive space-to-space weapons on that station.

I had thought that they test fired a weapon on Mir but it turned out to be Salyut-3, Almaz 2.

A very bad precedent.

Interesting.

A little-known fact, which may change under Space Force (tm), is that the US has for some time not had a manned space launch capability. NASA crews, on selection, start learning Russian, and they launch from Kazakhstan. That’s one of the reasons why NASA was ok with SpaceX hiring a lot of their technical staff and using their work.
