Book Recommendations

Post by Tiago Simões » Mon Jan 22, 2018 11:22 am

Post here recommendations for books 📚 anything, from any tradition, that might come into your mind, help me expand my (and others) wishlist. 🙂

Right now I'm reading a pdf of The Madman's Middle Way, but I do intent on buying it.

I am also interested in buying Kukai: major works. And maybe something on the Shin Buddhist tradition.
Then, the Licchavi Vimalakīrti spoke to the elder Śāriputra and the great disciples: “Reverends, eat of the food of the Tathāgata! It is ambrosia perfumed by the great compassion. But do not fix your minds in narrow-minded attitudes, lest you be unable to receive its gift.”

The Noble Mahāyāna Sūtra “The Teaching of Vimalakīrti”

Dogen's Shobogenzo is available in four PDFs for free download from BDK. It's an excellent translation as near as I can tell. I'm looking forward to reading this in depth when I get the opportunity.

Here's one that caught my eye. "Honen The Buddhist Saint: Essential Writings and Official Biography by Alfred Bloom", might be good to study the japanese pureland school.

Are you interested in Tibetan or Nyingma Buddhism? If so, I recommend "Words of My Perfect Teacher" and "Cascading Waterfalls of Nectar."

IF you are interested in Pureland, I would probably recommend "Buddhist of Wisdom and Faith". It's probably one of the best books I've read on Mahayana Buddhism with a focus on Pureland.

Nyingma is my main interest ☺️

Not specifically Nyingma, but 'Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism' is in my opinion, indispensable.

If you are interested in Nyingma, you may be interested by the books of Khenchen Palden Sherab Rinpoche and Khenpo Tsewang Dongyal Rinpoche.

If you're interested in Japanese Pure Land, there's also the large collection of Honen's writings in "Promise of Amida Buddha". There may be some overlap between this and the other Honen book you mentioned.

Some other reading I've enjoyed over the years:
* Buddhism of Wisdom and Faith
* Pure Land, Pure Mind
* Pure Land Zen, Zen Pure Land
* Lord of Love (about Chenrezig in Tibetan Buddhism)
* To Dispel the Misery of the World (Tibetan Buddhism, great for learning about bodhicitta and the realms)
* Opening the Hand of Thought (Soto Zen, clearest intro to Zen I've ever read)
* No Beginning, No End (also Soto Zen, more general essays)
Amitābha!
OM PADMO USHNISHA VIMALE HUM PHAT (Lotus Pinnacle of Amoghapasha)
OM HANU PHASHA BHARA HE YE SVAHA ("Just by Seeing" Mantra)
AH AAH SHA SA MA HA (Six Syllables of Clairvoyance Mantra)

The Buddhas and Bodhisattvas have unobstructed vision in all directions.
Everything is in their presence; and I stand in front of them. -- Shantideva

For anyone interested in Nyingma, this is indispensable: https://www.shambhala.com/complete-nyingma.html

Another important one is Dudjom Rinpoche's overview: https://www.wisdompubs.org/book/nyingma ... n-buddhism

Being a Dharma book bibliophile is unfortunately an expensive hobby.
