Correct Golden Light Sutra?

Post by Tenma » Wed Aug 15, 2018 6:29 am

Does anyone know which version is correct? I've used the FPMT version, but recently, I just discovered it to be VERY different from the Buddha-Nature translation of this sutra and am now confused on which sutra is right as the dharanis are different, there are more chapters in one version, and the subject is quite different.

While we're at it, does anyone know the source of the following dharanis:

Namah Samanta Buddhanam Apratihata Shasananam Tadyatha Jayanjaya Svajaya Maha Karunika Vishva Rupini Gaccha Gacha Svabhavanam Sarva Buddhamshca Vi-Sarjaya Sa-Parivaram...

Namah Samanta Buddhanam Acintaya Adbuta Rupinam Tadyatha Om Vishve Vishva Sambhave Vishva Rupini Ka Ha Ka Ha...

Namah Samanta jnaya ashesa spharana vi Shuddha buddhebhyo dasha dishi sarva tathagatebhyo arhadbhyah samyaksam Buddhebhyo Namo Manjushriye sakala bala karam kalpa gata-cetase vimala guna alam krtaya amara nara-sura bhujaga vidyadhara jata-makuta nis-kasita pada pitham...

And where can one find Amoghavajra's translation of the Mahayana Yoga Vajratta Sagara Manjushri Sahas Rabhuja Sahas Rapatra Maha Sasana Raja Sutra from the Tripitaka in English(free please on some sort of Pdf, I'm afraid I can't buy any sutras)?

There appears to be three different versions of this sutra - in 21 chapters, in 29 chapters and 31 chapters. The version of the sutra the FPMT has translated on its website is the 21 chapter. They do make available the 29 chapter version in tibetan and mongolian and the 31 chapter version in tibetan and vietnamese. They also say:
Sutra of Golden Light, 29 Chapter Translation Project

While the translation of the 31-chapter edition of the Sutra of Golden Light is already underway, the translation of the 29-chapter edition of the Sutra of Golden Light from Tibetan into English has yet to begin. Students are welcome to make a financial donation in order to support this FPMT translation project requested by Lama Zopa Rinpoche. We also humbly request students’ prayers and dedications for the project’s quick and successful completion

Meanwhile the version of the translation from the Sugatagarbha Translation Group is of the 29 chapter version.

Perhaps this is the reason for the differences you found?
