8 Bodhisattvas/8 Consciousnesses

Post by Seeker12 » Tue Dec 11, 2018 7:59 pm

On Rigpawiki, for example, it says that the 8 great bodhisattvas (avalokiteshvara, akashagarbha, samantabhadra, etc) represent the pure state of the 8 consciousnesses, but there's not much information more than that on the topic.

Does anyone know where I might find more information on this topic, whether in a sutra, tantra, or commentary?

Thank you.
Better than if there were thousands of meaningless words is one meaningful word that on hearing brings peace.

Better than if there were thousands of meaningless verses is one meaningful verse that on hearing brings peace.

And better than chanting hundreds of meaningless verses is one Dhamma-saying that on hearing brings peace.

Different Tantric systems will elucidate these differently. It's best to learn this in relation to whatever you may be practicing, in my view. In one particular tradition, for instance, Kshitigarbha represents the sense field of the eyes, Vajrapani the ears, etc.

"Absolute Truth is not an object of analytical discourse or great discriminating wisdom,
It is realized through the blessing grace of the Guru and fortunate Karmic potential.
Like this, mistaken ideas of discriminating wisdom are clarified."

It's explained when you study a Zhitro mandala. Khenpo Rinpoche Namdrol has teachings on the Guhyagarbha Tantra that cover this. You can find an explanation for example in lecture #151 here.

I figured it was probably in the Guhyagarbha Tantra at least. Thanks both of you.
