8 Bodhisattvas/8 Consciousnesses

Post by ThreeVows »

On Rigpawiki, for example, it says that the 8 great bodhisattvas (avalokiteshvara, akashagarbha, samantabhadra, etc) represent the pure state of the 8 consciousnesses, but there's not much information more than that on the topic.

Does anyone know where I might find more information on this topic, whether in a sutra, tantra, or commentary?

Thank you.

Different Tantric systems will elucidate these differently. It's best to learn this in relation to whatever you may be practicing, in my view. In one particular tradition, for instance, Kshitigarbha represents the sense field of the eyes, Vajrapani the ears, etc.

It's explained when you study a Zhitro mandala. Khenpo Rinpoche Namdrol has teachings on the Guhyagarbha Tantra that cover this. You can find an explanation for example in lecture #151 here.

I figured it was probably in the Guhyagarbha Tantra at least. Thanks both of you.
