I attended a Phowa empowerment and teaching

Post by Cartery » Mon Nov 19, 2012 7:03 am

In this Phowa text, Vajrayogini is wearing clothes in the visualization. I actually asked the lama what kind of clothes she is wearing, and he said that the text just says that she's wearing some kind of clothes which are made from red silk.

Silk is far better then cotton. It's cooler and lighter.
Equanimity is the ground. Love is the moisture. Compassion is the seed. Bodhicitta is the result.

-Paraphrase of Khensur Rinpoche Lobsang Tsephel citing the Guhyasamaja Tantra

"All memories and thoughts are the union of emptiness and knowing, the Mind.
Without attachment, self-liberating, like a snake in a knot.
Through the qualities of meditating in that way,
Mental obscurations are purified and the dharmakaya is attained."

Yes, silk is quite a lovely material. But unfortunately, it is made by boiling living silk worms before they have hatched into moths. So I have always found it disconcerting that it is so highly valued in Tibetan Buddhist culture. I like to imagine that the silk garments of the Sambhogakaya are made by a special kind of miraculous silk, offered by bodhisattva silk worms who are able to produce it freely without dying.

Light, intangible, wisdom-phenomenal, magical display silk.
