Ngakpa/Ngakma Teachers?

Post by ampina08 »

I'm very interested in the Ngakpa tradition of Buddhism (Ordained Sangha that are not Monastic and not Lay). It seems that the Nyingma put more emphasis on this group than other schools like Kagyu or Gelug. Does anyone know of legitimate Ngakpa or Ngakma teachers in the US?

*Also posting this in Dharma in Everyday Life*

Thanks :)

Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche was a Nyingma Ngakpa who established a bunch of centers in the US. I'm not sure how many of the present teachers are Ngakpa but it's one place to look.

You could reasonably bet that nearly any of the main
centers focusing on the Dudjom Tersar lineage
would have ngapas in their midst, especially
among the senior disciples and lamas. Look
for those places where the full lineage transmission
is being practiced.

That list must be somewhat old. Lama Tharchin passed away a while ago.

In Los Angeles, we have Loppon Ed Heckerman at Yeshe Nyingpo and Khenpo Sonam at L'hundrup Choling.

The OP asked for "legitimate" ngakpa teachers. Some on crazy man's list are -- at least -- very controversial. One should examine everyone's qualifications and character carefully before getting involved with them based on their patter or their charisma.

Ngodrup's advice seems sound.

Indeed so. Lama Tharchin Rinpoche's parinirvana was in July of 2013.

Nevertheless, Vajrayana Foundation & its center Pema Osel Ling is still very much there and going well. Many visiting Lamas giving teachings and others taking terms of residence for teachings, empowerments, and to support the ngondro program.

There are also many other Lamas in the greater San Francisco Bay Area who are Ngkakpas.

Just find yourself a Throma Nagmo empowerment (with all the optional extras) and you'll be set!

If you were in Europe I would invite you to the one I am hosting in July with Loppon Ogyan Tanzin, unfortunately for you, you are in the U$A.

Pema Dorje will be giving Troma this summer in a couple of places.

If you want to be a Ngakpa, seriously, and not just play "dress-up," you need to find a qualified Guru and receive a complete empowerment, along with complete "lung" (reading transmission) and "tri" (instructions). Then, you need to guard your samayas, and commit yourself to pure view and maintain your practice until you bring it to fruition and are able to benefit others. THAT is what a Ngakpa is.

That is definitely the goal. I've decided to take the Troma empowerment form Lama Pema Dorje in August. I'm hoping it will be a complete empowerment for all aspects of the practice. It seems that this has come right on time as I've been very interested in the Nyingma tradition along with Chod and upon seeing a picture of LPD a while ago, felt an unexplained urge to want to meet him. So I think this will be good :)
