NEW DELHI (AFP) – The Dalai Lama intends to retire as head of the Tibetan government in exile next year as he looks to reduce his ceremonial role and scale back his workload, his spokesman told AFP Tuesday.

The Tibetan movement in exile, based in the northern Indian hill station of Dharamshala since 1960, directly elected a political leader in 2001 for the first time.

"Since then, His Holiness has always said he has been in a semi-retired state," spokesman Tenzin Taklha said.

Is he sick or dying? If not, what's the motive here? What are his post-retirement plans?

A stupid person might accuse him of laziness or giving up on the Tibetans.

I think this is the crucial passage from the report:

''Taklha stressed that his "retirement" would be from his ceremonial responsibilities as head of the government, such as signing resolutions, not his role as spiritual leader and figurehead for Tibetans.''

Still His Holiness is getting old... maybe we should pray for his health, just in case.

May His Holiness' body remain completely healthy and free from all illness, so he can continue his Buddha-activity for the benefit of all beings.
TEYATA OM BEKANDZE BEKANDZE MAHABEKANDZE RADZE SAMUGATE SOHA
TEYATA OM BEKANDZE BEKANDZE MAHABEKANDZE RADZE SAMUGATE SOHA
TEYATA OM BEKANDZE BEKANDZE MAHABEKANDZE RADZE SAMUGATE SOHA

May His Holiness continue to shine the light of Chenrezig's compassion in this world for many decades to come!
Namo Ratna Trayaya, Namah Arya Jnana Sagara, Vairochana, Byuhara Jara Thathagataya, Arhate, Samyaksam Buddhaya, Nama Sarwa Tathagata Bhyay, Arhate Bhyah, Samyaksam Buddhe Bhyah, Nama Arya Avalokiteshvaraya Bodhisattvaya, Maha Sattvaya, Maha Karunikaya, Tadyatha, Om Dhara Dhara, Dhiri Dhiri, Dhuru Dhuru Itte Vatte, Chale Chale, Prachale Prachale, Kusume Kusume Vare, Ili Milli, Jiti Jvalam, Apanaye Soha.

With the combination of modern medicine, Indian and Tibetan medicine, and Buddhist meditation, I'm sure it's possible that His Holiness could live well past the age of 100.
