I have received and been practicing the Longchen Nyingthik Ngondro for a few years ago. I am curious as to what my relationship is with the lineage holder who gave me the transmission? Have I taken Samaya vows?
Thank you for your time!!
Does receiving Ngondro entail taking Samaya vows
Re: Does receiving Ngondro entail taking Samaya vows
There isnt a single answer to this question.
Samaya is between you and the teacher, it is not really something that we can answer for you in this case.
Did you receive it in the context of empowerment?
"All phenomena of samsara depend on the mind, so when the essence of mind is purified, samsara is purified. Since the phenomena of nirvana depend on the pristine consciousness of vidyā, because one remains in the immediacy of vidyā, buddhahood arises on its own. All critical points are summarized with those two." - Longchenpa

You should practice pure perception of, or at least hold in high esteem all teachers that have conveyed to you any of the Buddhadharma. But as to whether you have received the 14, 25 and so forth commitments, hat depends on whether you received an empowerment, pointing out or similar.
If in doubt err on the side of caution.

Well, if you received the empowerment needed for the purification section...

Re: Does receiving Ngondro entail taking Samaya vows
That one's always puzzled me. Most lamas give ngondros as lungs and don't do a wang for Vajrasattva, so this is at least common practice. However I've never come across an authority that spells out the in general if/when front generation is permissible without having received a separate major empowerment or equivalent.
The first ngondro I received involved self-generation (as a different yidam, not VS) during the guru yoga. My lama's advice was just to skip that and do the guru yoga appearing as myself in impure form.

I’m not sure. It was during a week long Monlam at Bodhgaya and I just went to DK Rinpoche and asked him for the transmission for the ngondro and he just gave it to me right there.

No, of course you haven't taken Samaya vows, but if you value your Ngondro practice you have a good connection with him.Chodzin wrote: ↑Mon Apr 02, 2018 7:33 am

I suggest asking this question of one of the Siddhartha's Intent's instructors in your region. The list of regions can be found on the homepage of the SI website. Then just follow the link to get information about the local contact.
