Scriptural Basis for Three Roots

Post by Seeker12 » Sun Apr 08, 2018 8:58 pm

I’m wondering where the general principle of taking refuge in not only the Three Jewels but additionally the Three Roots (Guru, Yidam, Daka/Dakini/Protector) comes from. I’m not so much interested in an explanation of them as much as purely the scriptural basis, whether Sutric, Tantric, or in commentary. Thanks.
Better than if there were thousands of meaningless words is
one meaningful word that on hearing brings peace. Dhp

Pretty much every tantra.
Kye ma!
The river of continuity is marked by impermanence.
Ceaseless flowing of appearance.
Beautiful and repulsive.
The dance of life and death is a display of the vast expanse.
With gratitude the watcher and the watched pass through the barrier of duality.

The Three Roots don't exist in Sutra, as far as I know, but only in Tantra. Depending on what system you're practicing, they could be Lama/Yidam/Khandro, or Lama/Yidam/ChoKyong.

"Absolute Truth is not an object of analytical discourse or great discriminating wisdom,
It is realized through the blessing grace of the Guru and fortunate Karmic potential.
Like this, mistaken ideas of discriminating wisdom are clarified."
- (Kyabje Bokar Rinpoche, from his summary of "The Ocean of Definitive Meaning")
