Hats in the Tibetan Monastic Traditions

Post by kalden yungdrung »

Tashi delek,

There are many hats in the Tibetan Monastic Traditions.

All these hats have a certain story.

Feel free to post here the hat of your Tibetan Tradition, with a little story if possible.

Tashi delek,

Start with a Bön hat. This hat is worn in Tantric Rituals.

KAGYU

The Gampopa Hat.

Heard from a Kagyu Lama that the first Gampopa Hat, was made from a horse saddle.
Don´t know if his is based on facts.

PANDIT HAT:

The Pandit Hat has 3 horizontal stripes.
The Pandit hat symbolizes the "wise, educated or learned man" with specialized knowledge.
I have seen students of the Tibetan University in Varanasi with this hat, when they finished their study.

- Is this degree the same as the Geshe degree?
- Meaning of the 3 horizontal stripes ?

Tashi delek L,

Yes many interpretations about that Gampopa hat.
If it would be a shoe from Mila, then he would have big feet, isn´t it?

Best wishes

I head somewhere (source forgotten, sorry) that the Gampopa hat was made to resemble the mountain behind Daklha Gampo Monastery. Far fetched, perhaps, but I did hear it somewhere.
All best wishes

Tashi delek,

One of the most famous Crowns / Hats in the Tibetan Spiritual Traditions is the Karmapa´s Black Crown.
A present of the Ming Emperor Yung Lo a devoted adherent of H.H. the 5th Karmapa Dezhin Shegpa.

Below we see H.H. the 16th Karmapa Rangjung Rigpe Dorje, wearing the Black Crown.

Tashi delek,

Below the hat of the New Bön / Bön Sarma Tradition.

On top of the Hat, we see a Dorje / Vajra and in front of the Hat, the Yungdrung.

Tashi delek,

Nyingma has many Monastic hats, unbelievable, i count 9 Hats.

Maybe one of you could give some explanations to these impressive Nyingma Hats?
Also the names of these Nyingma Rinpochees are important to know.

Thanks

They are not necessarily monastic hats. Not all of those lamas are monks.

Tashi delek,

Many thanks to Josef and Mandog :namaste:

Have some further questions regarding these beautiful Nyingma Hats.

- Are these Hats seen as particular to a Nyingma Rinpoche ?
- Nyang Ral
- Pema Chogyal
- jatson Nyingpo
- Longchenpa

- Are these Hats seen as belonging to a certain Nyingma Tradition like
- Mindroling
- Payul

Which of these Nyingma Hats are related to the above mentioned questions ?

Thanks .

Most of them are Guru Rinpoche hats.

Norwegian wrote: Wed Oct 24, 2018 2:17 pm The Guru Padmasambhava hats are also not "monastic hats".

Agree the Guru Rinpoche Hats are not Monastic Hats, then the only exception here.
Did not know that as non Nyingma follower, so it was a misunderstanding, can happen.
The rest of the hats and chaps etc. are off topic posts.

Otherwise we can place here photos of Tibetan Rinpochees with chaps of NY baseball chaps, summer hats, winter hats, hats of fur etc. which was never my intention here.
