Prayers before reading dharma texts

Post by Kris »

What prayers are generally used before reading from dharma texts?
I'm interested to see if there are formal/informal standards or do people just dive right in.
The profound path of the master.

The supreme, profound, and sublime dharma is difficult to meet even in a billion eons. But now I have been fortunate enough to have seen it, heard it, received it and kept it. I vow to attain the true meaning of the Tathagata.

Something similar to the above is common.

Depends, recite refuge + motivation prayers or lineage prayer could be a good idea. Or offer 7limb prayer for merit to understand.
“Observing samaya involves to remain inseparable from the union of wisdom and compassion at all times, to sustain mindfulness, and to put into practice the guru’s instructions”. Garchen Rinpoche

For those who do virtuous actions,
goodness is what comes to pass.
For those who do non-virtuous actions,
that becomes suffering indeed.

This is prayer which authorship is attributed to Wu Zeitan, famous Chinese empress of the Tang dynasty and great sponsor of buddhism. It is common prayer in China and Japan chanted also in zen monasteries and temples.

The masters at Sethar larung Gar said that their standard routine for any Dharma activities is reciting the King Aspiration Prayers of Bodhisattva Samantabhadra. The standard way to end is also reciting the dedication verses in this prayer.

Ho! All the possible appearances and existences of samsara and nirvana have the same source, yet two paths and two results arise as the magical display of awareness and unawareness.

“Where do atomic bombs come from?”
Zen Master Seung Sahn said, “That’s simple. Atomic bombs come from the mind that likes this and doesn’t like that.”

"Even if you practice only for an hour a day with faith and inspiration, good qualities will steadily increase. Regular practice makes it easy to transform your mind. From seeing only relative truth, you will eventually reach a profound certainty in the meaning of absolute truth."

Thanks everyone!
Very practical replies.
I was unaware of the Manjusri prayer (Gang Lo Ma) so I'll incorporate that sometimes as well as the other suggestions.
The profound path of the master.
