What is the role of prayer in context of tibetan buddhism?

Are there any traditional or modern resources and commentaries about prayers? Why to pray? What is the benefit of prayers? Do the prayers really help to other beings or its just a skillfull mean or training of ones mind?

Here is a quote from the book I just finished reading - Lama Surya Das/Natural Radiance

'Buddhism is a nontheistic tradition; there is no one to whom you are actually praying. Rather, the gesture is intended to convey respect for everything that is, including your own buddha nature.'
