Drubwang Shakya Shri : The cook who became Mahasiddha

Post by phantom59 »

Shakya Shri began his spritual life as a cook at Dugu Monastery In the evening after his daily tasks was done he would sit beside the stove tying hos hair to the ceiling singlepointedly practice the whole hight Shakya Shri practiced with great diligence under the guidance of the 6th Khamtrul Rinpoche Tenpai Nyima (1849-1907) who became his root guru
recieving the teachings of Mahamudra From Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo(1820-1892) he recieved all the Nyingma tranmissions and teachings thus accomplishing the teaching of Dzogchen

For many years Shakya Shri practiced in a remote cave above the Khampagar monastery in Kham
with his consort and children All the family was happily living and practicing in absolute solitude and poverty The mocking of the monks continued and they became known as the dirty yogi family in the cave above who pollute the water in the valley

Ity was not until the 6th Yongzin Rinpoche Sheja Khunkyen travelled to tech in that area that Shakya Shri's realization became known Yongzin Rinpoche was camping with his retinue in a pasture below Shakya Shri's cave and while meditating had a vision of the entire mandala of 13 Cakrasambhava maifesting where Shakya Shri's cave lay Upon asking the locals who lived there they replied 'the dirty yogi' Yongzin Rinpoche invited Shakya Shri down to the monastery and tested his realization and was amazed at what Shakya Shri achieved He then named him Drubwang Shakya Shri(Drubwang means Great Yogi) and composed aprayer in praise of Shakya Shri's expriences He was also named Shakya Shri Jhana by Mipham Rinpoche after recognizing his profound understanding of Dzogchen

About seven years before he passed away he was invited by the 10th Gyalwang rukpa to Druk Sangag Choeling Monastery in Southern Tibet for personal teachings and to propagate the Drukpa Lineage However Shakya Shri requested to live in a remote place so the Gyalwang Drukpa assisted him in settling at Kyiphuk(Happy Cave) Shakya Shri became the root guru of the 10th Gyalwang Drukpa and many students acroos the Hinalayas flocked to recieve teachings from him Kyiphuk became a huge yogic training centre whgere all types of students monks, nuns, lay men and women practiced diligently under tight schedules living in cave dens tents and holes for no building was allowed Each was trainded according to their capacity in Dzogchen or Mahamudra There was one hill for Dzogchen practitioners and another for Mahamudra Many signs and realizations were displayed at that time and people's minds were transformed just by visiting the place Everything was imbued with Dharma

There were coutlees miracles thet his students witnessed and recounted including one where his body was transparent so that a butter lamp could be seen through it and he cast no shadow Everty one of his students manifested great signs at the time of death showing their level of realization to be very high His students and student's students are still scatttered everywhere throughout the Himalayas

Throughout the end of his life He used all his resources to renovate the 3 Holy Stupas of nepal Bhoudanath, Swayambhunath and Namo Buddha Though not all his renovations were completed during his lifetime His sons finihed the work soon after his passing He had 6 sons and 4 daughters All were great masters and lineage holders in their own right The daughters were all realized yoginis and emanations of Wisdom Dakinis and diplayed many miraculous powers

The youngest daughter Ashi Phurla was the spiritual consort of 10th Gyalwang Drukpa
and their son the 1st Thuksey Rinpoche without whom the Drukpa Lineage would have fallen apart at the critical time of the Cultural Revolution

By understanding everything you perceive from the perspective of the view, you are freed from the constraints of philosophical beliefs.
By understanding that any and all mental activity is meditation, you are freed from arbitrary divisions between formal sessions and postmeditation activity.
