Tibetans know the 14th Dalai Lama to be their spiritual leader. Everyone else knows him as a man of peace. Yesterday, there were birthday celebrations at the main Tibetan Temple in Dharamsala, India. This morning I sat on my deck here on Cape Cod, listening to birdsong, and I imagined the mammoth fete for the Dalai Lama. Was it a harmonic convergence of chanting and cake? He has spent his whole life teaching and living right action. Sometimes we get entangled in the Gordian knot of how to extend love to the unlovable, how to overcome our own ego and fear. Among the countless thoughts on love offered by the Dalai Lama, I am drawn to this one: Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible.
