Gandavyūha Sūtra verses

Post by Nicholas Weeks » Tue Jun 25, 2019 5:07 pm

Excerpts from the verse sections during the spiritual adventure of Bodhisattva Sudhana. No exclusive use of any translation.
Vairocana Radiant Vow Bodhisattva, aided by Buddha’s spiritual powers, contemplated the ten directions and uttered verses:

You should all contemplate
the inconceivability of the Buddha’s path
as, within this Jeta Grove,
he manifests the powers of his spiritual depths.

The spiritual power that the Well Gone One
manifests is boundless.
Everyone in the world is deluded and
confused and not able to understand it.

The profoundly marvelous dharmas of the Dharma King
are immeasurable and difficult to even conceive of.
The spiritual superknowledges he manifests
are such that no one would be able fathom them.
Glorious one, creator of all goodness, Mañjuśrī, his glorious eminence!

The spiritual superknowledges he manifests
are such that no one would be able fathom them.
So why would he manifest them?

Cleary comments in his Introduction:
The book begins with a symbolic description of manifestations of enlightened
awareness, explaining that those who are within a fixed system have not the
slightest inkling of the scope of consciousness that lies beyond the bounds of their
perceptions as conditioned by their training and development. It suggests that all
views that are conditioned by cultural and personal history are by definition
limiting, and there is a potential awareness that cuts through the boundaries
imposed by conventional description based on accumulated mental habit. According
to the scripture, it is the perennial task of certain people, by virtue of their own
development, to assist others in overcoming arbitrary restrictions of consciousness
so as to awaken to the full potential of mind.
There is a preceding prose section of many pages giving examples of why the Shravakas & Prateykabuddhas were oblivious to Buddha's powers and his realm. The bodhisattvas, (who can know the powers etc of Buddha) in the verse section are reminding those of the Arhat mindset why they cannot see or know the real Buddha. They must deepen & broaden their minds with further altruistic-bodhisattva development.

At that time, King of Invincible Vigor Bodhisattva, aided by Buddha’s spiritual powers, regarded the ten directions and said:

All should ponder these Sons of the Buddhas’
treasuries of wisdom and their virtuous qualities.
Having reached ultimate bodhi practices
they bring peace and calm to all worlds.

Their minds are originally clear and understanding,
so they easily enter all samādhis.
Their wisdom is boundless
and their states could never be measured.

This Jeta Grove is now
fully adorned,
clouds of bodhisattvas have gathered and
drawn close to where the Tathāgata abides.

Contemplate these vast oceans of assemblies
that are free of any attachments.
They have come forth from the ten directions
now seated atop bejeweled lotus thrones.

They have neither coming nor abiding,
neither dependent on anything nor discoursing idly.
Their stainless minds are unimpeded,
reaching the ultimate in the Dharma realm.

They raise the banner of wisdom
firm, solid and unshakable.
The know dharmas are free of transformation,
yet manifest transformational phenomena.
Glorious one, creator of all goodness, Mañjuśrī, his glorious eminence!

I think the idea was that no one can grasp the breadth of their plurality and variety, but that was just my reading.

In reverence for the root gnosis of the heart, the dharmakāya,
for the ever present good law of the heart, the lotus terrace,
for the inborn adornment of the trikāya, the thirty-seven sages dwelling in the heart,
for that which is removed from seed and fruit, the upright key to the universal gate,
for all boundless concentrations, the sea of virtue, the root perfection,
I prostrate, bowing to the hearts of all Buddhas.
