Looking for book(s) with shedra style teachings, not too many volumes

Discuss and learn about the traditional Mahayana scriptures, without assuming that any one school ‘owns’ the only correct interpretation.

Looking for book(s) with shedra style teachings, not too many volumes

Post by Arupajhana7 »

Hello, I am looking to fill in many of my gaps in knowledge of the philosophical systems in Buddhism. I am about to have two different jobs simultaneously so I will not be able to study extensively every night so a 12 volume treasury might not be the best. I am looking for something that is fairly complete but won't take me more than two years to read through.

I have already studied CTR's Path of individual liberation and much from his Path of the Boddhisatva.
I have already studied and read the following: Contemplating reality by Andy Karr, progressive stages of meditation on emptiness and The Sun of Wisdom by Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso, several Shambhala Seminary Transcripts (non-Shambhala curriculum suggestions going forward please), Old Path White Clouds, and Bikkhu Bodhi's "In the Buddha's Words".

I have read commentaries on the Heart Sutra and listened to lectures on Madhyamaka. I feel like I have some understanding of Madhyamaka but many gaps in my knowledge of the schools that preceded that view.

Some areas in particular that I would like to gain proficiency in in are the 12 Nidanas and the Chittimatra system.

Any suggestions?

Thank you so much!

It’s in four thin paperbacks that are not too hard to find. PDFs are online- I’m not sure if they’re pirated or released as a free dharma resource. I use the PDFs myself. I had a few of the paperbacks at one time but that was so many moves ago...

The Nectar of Manjushr's Speech
"All phenomena of samsara depend on the mind, so when the essence of mind is purified, samsara is purified. Since the phenomena of nirvana depend on the pristine consciousness of vidyā, because one remains in the immediacy of vidyā, buddhahood arises on its own. All critical points are summarized with those two." - Longchenpa

PSL has a complete shedra series. I haven't read these, but there other books are top notch.

NB: Those books are the Dudjom flavor of Nyingma.
These teachings include: the essential philosophical points of the Vaibhashika, Sautrantika, Mind Only (Chittamatra), and Madhyamaka Schools, as well as extensive instructions on the union of Rangtong and Shentong views as taught by the great masters Longchenpa and Mipham Rinpoche
I may get the set for our library here at my Kagyu monastery. Nobody here will read them, but they’ll be good to have around.

Hi!

Jigme Lingpa's "Treasury of Precious Qualities" (both books) seems like a concise set.

I bought the set for our library. It cost $200 including tax and shipping.
