New Translation: The Sūtra of Questions Regarding Death and Transmigration

Discuss and learn about the traditional Mahayana scriptures, without assuming that any one school ‘owns’ the only correct interpretation.

New Translation: The Sūtra of Questions Regarding Death and Transmigration

Post by Losal Samten »

Āyuṣpattiyathākāraparipṛcchāsūtra
Summary wrote:Questions Regarding Death and Transmigration contains explanations of Buddhist views on the nature of life and death, and a number of philosophical arguments against non-Buddhist conceptions, notably some based broadly on the Vedas.

The sūtra is set in the town of Kapilavastu at the time of the funeral of a young man of the Śākya clan. King Śuddhodana wonders about the validity of the ritual offerings being made for the deceased by the family and asks the Buddha seven questions about current beliefs on death and the afterlife. The Buddha answers each of the questions in turn.

After two interlocutors interrupt to test the Buddha’s omniscience, the discourse continues to present the Buddhist account of death and rebirth using a set of eight analogies, each of which complements the others in a detailed explanation.

Is this a different version than the one that was posted in this forum from the same website 2-3 years ago? I hadn't realized when it showed up on reddit again that this was a "new" translation.

Given that we've seen this before, can you provide more context? What makes it new? I thought the Tibetan canon didn't have a "version control" process and newer translations typically replaced the earlier versions?

....after searching, I have just realized that you were the one who posted it two years ago, and it wasn't an 84000.co link but an academia.edu link.
