Discuss and learn about the traditional Mahayana scriptures, without assuming that any one school ‘owns’ the only correct interpretation.

Question about the Pitāpūtrasamāgama-sūtra

Post by Lazy Lubber » Sat Nov 02, 2019 12:49 pm

Is the Pitāpūtrasamāgama-sūtra, a mahAyAnA sUtra or does it occur in the nikAyas or somewhere else? What is the historically accepted date of this sUtra? Does this sUtra precede nAgArjuna or is it a post-nAgArjuna sUtra?

There were several schools in the Sravakayana Dharma, each had their own collections or pitakas of scriptures. This sutra is from one of the Agama collections, thus it is certainly an early sutra. i.e. before Nagarjuna. See Agama https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C4%80gama_(Buddhism)

It's a Mahāyāna Sūtra, from the Ratnakūṭa collection. Western scholars consider it a late Sūtra -- it was translated into Chinese only in 568 CE.
