Institute for Contemporary Buddhist Ministry

Post by bupmee »

Good Evening Fellow Buddhist Friends,

I would like to take a moment to introduce you to a new educational program and institute, specifically designed for Buddhist spiritual care, chaplaincy, and contemporary Buddhist ministry & teaching.

The Institute for Contemporary Buddhist Ministry (https://buddhistmininstry.org) is a non-profit, yet to be accredited, educational organization offering curricula, courses, resources, and support for those interested and engaged in a Buddhist approach to contemplative teaching and pastoral care.

I serve ICBM as the President and one of the Co-Founders and would be greatly humbled and privileged if you would take a few moments to check out our website and program.

We are preparing 3 courses that will launch this Fall semester on Sep. 14. These courses are peer-driven and operate asynchronously online through our own private Moodle platform, so students can work and progress at their own pace.

Our tuition is competitive and reasonable, $40 USD per course, or $100 if you register for all 3 offered courses. Applications are now open and applying is free. (https://buddhistministry.org/application)

Please get in contact with me directly at [email protected] or head over to https://buddhistministry.org/contact to drop us a line. We can also schedule a time to speak/meet online through https://venbupmee.youcanbook.me

Thank you for your time and looking forward to hearing from you soon!

In the Dharma,

Ven. Bup Mee

Greetings Brothers & Sisters,

I hope this email finds you well and happy.

This message serves to inform you that the Winter 2017 semester of the Institute for Contemporary Buddhist Ministry (ICBM) is scheduled to begin courses on February 13, 2017.

All new ICBM students must complete ICBM’s application process ($20 application fee) and be admitted before registering for courses. The deadline for new applications is January 15

If you have not yet applied to ICBM, now is the time to take advantage and "lock-in” a low tuition rate of $60/course. Tuition rates are scheduled to increase in the following academic years.

Courses being offered this Winter include:

SPH 812 - Buddhist Ethics & Precepts
MPT 626 - Meditation Methods / Contemplative Practices
MCO 712 - Homiletics & Spiritual Teaching

Please visit ICBM’s website for further information on the program and to apply today. (https://buddhistministry.org)

You may also contact me directly, should you have any questions or concerns.

Good thoughts and wishes for a healthy and happy holiday season and New Year!

In the Dharma,

Can you speak a bit about the faculty who teach in this program? I tried to follow the "faculty" link from buddhistministry.org and got bupkis.

Also--would you please briefly describe the curriculum and pedagogy?

thanks

https://buddhistministry.org/organization/ is closest I found for teaching staff. "Faculty" tab looks like it is for faculty use only.

Is this project directly affiliated with or organized by the Taego Order, or is this an independent initiative undertaken by persons who are affiliated with the Taego Order?

Thanks for your questions.

Let me share an excerpt from the ICBM site that describes both our pedagogy and the role of our Course Facilitators.

From https://buddhistministry.org/academics/ ... al-design/:

ICBM draws upon the teaching strategies of Knowle’s Theory of Andragogy (adult-centered learning), Lave’s Theory of Situated Learning, and Heutagogy (self-determined learning). Additionally, our design and curriculum is influenced by several of the leading figures that have been at the front of the Critical Pedagogy educational and social movements, such as Paulo Freire, Henry Giroux, Ira Shor, and bell hooks.

Engaged learning is at the center of the ICBM educational theory. Courses are carefully constructed and designed to encourage critical engagement, reflection, and encourage individuals to actively integrate the principles and concepts introduced in ICBM courses into one’s own ministerial practice.

Students are provided opportunities to engage with peers through shared discussion and video/audio conferencing throughout each course.

ICBM courses are facilitated by experienced Buddhist teachers and other qualified professionals from other faith traditions and professional fields. While course facilitators are encouraged and invited to create and deliver instructional lectures, the primary responsibilities of course facilitators are to encourage and promote peer group interaction and discussion and offer individual support when needed.

Following the explanation above, ICBM Course Facilitators' role and function are different from that of a traditional lecturer or professor.

Additionally, you can peruse our Course Catalog here: https://buddhistministry.org/academics/catalog/

Our current ICBM team can be found here: https://buddhistministry.org/organization/

ICBM is continuously looking for qualified and enthusiastic Course Facilitators and team members. While ICBM cannot yet offer salaries reflective of Course Facilitator's skills and expertise, in some cases ICBM can offer a modest honorarium or stipend.

ICBM is an independent initiative and organization.

ICBM is formally affiliated with Boundless Buddha Zen Society in St. Louis, MO.
