I don't always agree with Monbiot, but this is spot on.

For professional reasons, we spent a number of years the West Country of the UK before moving back to Greater London nearly eight years ago.
The part of Devon in which we lived looked at first glance like an idyll. Green fields, gentle hills leading down to the sea.
A closer look though revealed something sinister. Beyond the gardens of the villages was a vast desert where no life stirred, sang or ran. It had all been sacrificed to monoculture and chemical farming methods.
There is quite seriously more wildlife in the suburbs of London than in much of the English countryside.
"Any major dude with half a heart
Will surely tell you my friend,
Any minor world that breaks apart
Can fall together again.
Any major dude will tell you."

Steely Dan.
