Too general of a question in some ways ...if you wanted a place to start though, www.buddhanet.net has lots of free Ebooks.
For "intro" type books, a lot of people I know have enjoyed Thich Nhat Hanh's The Heart of The Buddha's Teaching.
His Holiness The Dalai Lama wrote a book called A Profound Mind that I really enjoyed. It really depends on what kind of thing you are looking for.
Meditate upon Bodhicitta when afflicted by disease
Meditate upon Bodhicitta when sad
Meditate upon Bodhicitta when suffering occurs
Meditate upon Bodhicitta when you are scared

Bodhicaryavatara can use in some parts more explanation but is a source of wealth for inspiration for so called advanced one as beginner.

If you want to learn meditation, I cannot recommend Joy of Living by Mingyur Rinpoche highly enough. It gives a thorough introduction of meditation theory and practice.

One of the best paid ones is close to free - a lot of them are.
Entering the Stream is really great..
The Unborn is a wonderful book about Zen, particularly from the viewpoint of Bankei.
Zen master Bankei was a very beautiful, teacher who specifically said, you do not need to practice austerities -
He had done so himself through his lifetime, and could speak from experience!
He recommended his students not be as austere as he had been -
Still, meditation is very good; he didn't through it out altogether.
The great book, The Three Pillars of Zen, edited by Kapleau, is very beneficial, wonderful, and significant.
It has good descriptions of Shikantaza.
I also recommend Gutenberg.org to search for books that may be free - in the public archive; the public domain.
