Meditation music

Post by shaunc »

I was wondering if any of you have had any experience with meditation music. Two nights ago I was meditating in our bedroom and my wife decided to join me.
My usual meditation technique is to concentrate on the breath. I was taught this meditation technique by Thai forrest monks, the only difference that I do is use the word Amida rather than buddho on the inhale/exhale.
When my wife joined me however, she put on some meditation/flute music that she'd found on the internet.
I must admit that I found it very relaxing. I should also say here that as a follower of jodo shinshu (shin buddhism) I don't meditate to accumulate merit or to try and climb higher up the spirituality/enlightenment ladder but I just do it mainly for relaxation although I do believe that it helps me with self reflection and deep listening.
But I did find that the music was a great help, especially with the relaxation side of things.
Good luck and best wishes.
Namu Amida Butsu.
Shaun.

When I meditate, I don't listen to music. Though sometimes I put on this to just relax and contemplate and philosophize.

I see they say that "Sacred Chants of Buddha" is New Age. But I think it is very compatible with Buddhism. It's very nice, and I don't support New Age. Just call it modern Western music about Buddhism. My Dad brought it to me from Nepal, so they sell it even there.

The other one "The Third Eye" is hard to come by, but they will classify it as "ethnic music" but it is made by a reknown group in Nepal and it is very universal for being so-called ethnic. You will love it.

I don't usually listen to music while meditating either. It was pretty much a one off as usually my wife doesn't join me while I'm meditating.
Thanks for the link, I'll check it out when I have time.

I also listen to this modern music. It's not with a Buddhist theme, but it is very philosophical and for me it works like meditation music. Believe it or not. :-)

Gayatris etc. are great for relaxation, but meditation works best for me silent.

For me the best music during meditation is silence, music can be a distraction.
But otherwise I appreciate very much music of relaxation.
