Buddhist Authorities Hunt Down Monk For Being Too Ripped

Post by 如傑優婆塞 » Thu Nov 29, 2018 6:37 am

Less than a week after anonymous photos of a ripped monk went viral online, national Buddhism authorities are on the hunt for the man, who they say tarnished the religion’s image. More here

I'd let him take refuge in my flat :spy: :emb:

But on a more serious note. This is ridiculous.

What is ridiculous in your view? If it was a monk then it is inappropriate behaviour, if it was not a monk then it still risks raising inappropriate thoughts and actions in relation to a "supposed" monastic : I'd let him take refuge in my flat

If you want to think of it in capitalist terms - this can harm the brand-image of the Sangha

Sangha has bigger problems than a "ripped monk". Especially there. Plus I honestly doubt that it is a real monk, where would he get the time to do it? Did his elders did not notice he is bulking up? Also I doubt one muscular monk would do so much damage. I'd be more concerned with monks smoking, enjoying drugs and other things. I for myself would more enjoy supporting aesthetically pleasing monks than the fat immoral and crooked ones.

And the situation just by itself is ridiculous. If you don't see it as such then you don't see it as such.

Young men often ordain temporarily in Thailand. There's a good chance he's only been a monk a short time and is just a young man into lifting. Regardless, it is great that anyone is into keeping fit and strong.

I have heard that lifting is great for meditating in the movement.

Ah, I see. A fat monk is not as worthy of support as a "ripped monk".

Now that would be ridiculous.

Dude, you have just totally ignored half the adjectives connected to that particular fat monk.

Better than the other pair of clowns that got into a drunken knife fight over the best way to propagate the dharma.

I really doubt that you can maintain mass like that on a monastic diet for any real length of time, unless you're getting a frak ton of creatine and whey isolate in your alms bowl.

It requires a lot of attention, of course. But more importantly looking like that takes a huge amount of dedication and discipline. Great personal attributes to apply to dharma.

Indeed. Temporarily-ordained monks with muscles aren't exactly unknown. Consider, for example, Buakaw:

He's a long way from being the best in his generation in Thailand, but everyone loves him because of his career outside Thailand. A few friends of mine have met him, say he's an extremely friendly and polite person - outside the ring, that is.

Heard about this guy. He's doing remarkable work with very little resources.

I believe having strong body muscles will not exclude enlightment for the mind.
Rather, I bleieve muscles and exercise and fitness supports right action, and can be used properly in the 8-fold noble path towards full enlightment!
The fact of being ripped alone will not hinder the progress towards enlightment; instead it can support the progress towards enlightment if used properly. Actions reflect back to the mind!

I regard the chinese Shaolin monks as truly authentic buddhist monks with authenic lineage tradition.
And I would believe a lot of them are ripped and muscularly well built too, via extensive practice of martial artsl, just like the honarable Buakaw Thai monk metioned in above posts.

Thus I believe whoever criticises ripped monks for being ripped alone are just being narrow-minded.
Power to the righteous!
