Famous American protestant teacher Billy Graham dies at age 99

Post by Fortyeightvows » Fri Feb 23, 2018 7:41 am

I had never heard of him before, but reading about his life and work, he sounds like an incredible teacher and a major player in religious circles and among world leaders.

Was anyone on on dharmawheel his student?

Frankly, I thought he had died years ago.
He was important in the US in the time of Nixon, as a somewhat reasonable leader of the religious right before it before the religious loony right.
His successors have become steadily trashier, so from a 21st century perspective he looks pretty good, but really he has been irrelevant for decades. And he never had anything new or original to offer in the first place, afaik - he was just a particularly charismatic old-school travelling preacher.

FWIW, his biggest influence on my life was his caricature in Heinlein's wonderful Stranger in a Strange Land.

Well, one thing he seems to have had (rarer and rarer especially among evangelical preachers) was a high standard of personal ethics, though he was often used by politicians seeking to capitalize on his reputation.

try reading non-Christian newssites about him, like for example The Huffingtonpost. You will geta bit different portrayal of him.

He brought evangelical Christianity out of the circus tents in the backwaters of the South into the White House. Thanks for that, now we're reaping the fruits of that unholy alliance.

And his son Franklin is a menace.
