From The North Pole To Rome.

Post by Simon E. » Mon Feb 26, 2018 7:56 pm

A weather phenomenon called 'A Sudden Stratospheric Warming' over the north pole is bringing large volumes of snow to Europe. In Rome, the Coliseum and Vatican City are shrouded in white..
The British media, which has a penchant for the melodramatic, has dubbed the phenomenon
'The Beast From The East' because it is reaching the UK via Siberia.

Just to put this in some kind of context..The West of England is currently under a blanket of snow.

Yesterday reporters for the BBC were in villages where 30-year-old people were seeing heavy snow in their home villages for the very first time

The phenomenon might or might not be a result of global climate change..but a phenomenon it certainly is.

The snow in the Scottish borders where i live is currently around 50 cm.
The nature of diverse phenomena is non-dual. This means that both pure vision and impure vision are a manifestation of the energy of the primordial state. Even though in reality there is no duality, everything manifests separately. KG

Looking forward to the Beast From the East meeting Storm Emma and dumping some proper snow here.

There's a Red weather warning of potential harm to life. I've called the threatened area the Red Dragon in honour of St. David's Day. :)

Bit nostalgic for our time in Buxton..........this would class as Summer weather there! ;)

Yes, probably.
We had this same amount of snow around the 20th of january but they didn't bother issuing a red alert then. I guess these alerts are thought of in terms of human capita per square mile. If we are just a couple of unimportant humans on a few mile radius they probably think that red alerts are not justified.

I don't know the history of these Red and Yellow warnings. I don't recall any such thing before the last few months...

Nah. It's called extreme weather - winter doesn't make headlines in the other hemisphere.
Four skiers have been killed and another injured in an avalanche in the French Alps, as the deadly Siberian weather system nicknamed "Beast from the East" continued to cause chaos across Europe.
The group was on a ski touring expedition in an off-trail area near Entraunes, close to the Italian border in the southern Alps.

The identities of the skiers were not immediately released. Prosecutor Jean-Michel Pretre of Nice said in remarks shown on French television that they were "seniors", all with experience in backcountry skiing.

Meanwhile, the extraordinary weather system, which has now claimed more than 50 lives, continued to bring disruption to many countries across Europe. ...

Key points:

More than 20 people have died in Poland since the cold snap began
Emergency shelters have been opened in many countries to help the homeless and citizens left stranded
Hundreds of flights were cancelled in the United Kingdom, Ireland and Switzerland

Get used to them, and get used to being thankful for them.
The era of frequent extreme weather events driven by global warming has coincided pretty well with our technological ability to observe them and warn people about them.

Thanks Kim... :(

Yes this is a unusual weather 'event' in terms of Europe.
It would not compare to winters in Canada or northern central USA, but we do have not the history and subsequent means of coping.
This is particularly so in the case of Southern England where the world's image of England in winter is the result of descriptions made of a mini ice age of a decade or so during the time that Dickens was writing.
The reality is that my eldest granddaughter did not see snow until she was in her teens.
So the heavy snow that lies in her (and my) hometown today is something we collectively have not been prepared for historically.

No, this is specifically caused because the Arctic has warmed once again suddenly (as it did last year) and abnormally. The Arctic is some 40 degrees F above normal in the dead of Arctic winter (the sun rises again over the Arctic later this month).

This is an unusual situation and is a consequence of global warming.

ok so i was being obtuse and thought it funny ...

We are experiencing really strange and harmful weather patterns as well here in Canada. I'm very much on the side ,which is that of human interference with the global atmosphere ,and humans are the cause for these harmful weather patterns .

i could show you pictures of Toronto when coal fired generation stations were in full swing and now that we have abolished them .

Thanks, Minobu.
I'm glad Toronto has cleaned up its act - every city that does this helps the rest of the world as well.
But the weird wild weather is going to keep on coming for quite a while, basically because we've added energy to the atmosphere.
Here's a US example of Europe's current Beast: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-03-04/s ... al/9507002

Winter storm kills five people, leaves millions without power in United States
Five people, including two children, have been killed in the United States' north-east during a fierce winter storm authorities say they will "never forget".

Key points:
Five dead, including 6yo and 11yo boys
2.4 million homes and businesses without power in north-east, mid-west
Coastal communities warned storm "life and death" situation

When was a kid growing up in Glasgow, Scotland in the early 1960s, we might see one snowfall a winter. If there was a 1" accumulation, that was considered a heavy snowfall. And it usually melted by supper time.

We got lucky here in Wiltshire, where any snow at all is rare........some drifting 4 or 5 feet, some deeper in sunken lanes. Max the Weimaraner cross disappeared at times, as did my wife. ;)
