Steven Hawking is now dead

And it had to be on Pi day...
And Einstein's birthday...
And Galileo's death day...

I haven't read his books, but of course have heard a lot about him and also saw the movie about his life, great, brilliant mind.

Died on Pi day, too. I think Hawking thought that there were no meaningful or mystical coincidences, nevertheless.

It's fitting seeing as how he was born on the 300th anniversary of Galileo's death.

One brilliant quote pointing out the frequent disconnect between philosophical musings and ordinary life:
I have noticed even people who claim everything is predestined, and that we can do nothing to change it, look before they cross the road.

Really a remarkable man! I was yesterday watching a program dedicated to him. He said: is there really a world on its own? He said then what sounded like this:
Zal (the appearance of a seemingly external world): is the energy of the individual that appears as a seemingly external world. The individual sees himself as a separate entity that lives in outer world of objects. But these outer objects/world are actually projections from his own energy.

He gave an example how a mother and her child a toddler were both living "in their particular world".

Dalai Lama said often; if science can prove anything in Buddhism is wrong than we will have to accept that and see how. But science is not contradicting.

Steven Hawking, wonderful man.

This is my simple religion. There is no need for temples; no need for complicated philosophy. Our own brain, our own heart is our temple; the philosophy is kindness.
His Holiness Dalai Lama.

There's quite a lot more about him here - including links to his interviews and a TED talk.

His final paper : A Smooth Exit from Eternal Inflation?, S. W. Hawking, Thomas Hertog
The usual theory of inflation breaks down in eternal inflation. We derive a dual description of eternal inflation in terms of a deformed CFT located at the threshold of eternal inflation. The partition function gives the amplitude of different geometries of the threshold surface in the no-boundary state. Its local and global behavior in dual toy models shows that the amplitude is low for surfaces which are not nearly conformal to the round three-sphere and essentially zero for surfaces with negative curvature. Based on this we conjecture that the exit from eternal inflation does not produce an infinite fractal-like multiverse, but is finite and reasonably smooth.

“Philosophy,” according to Stephen Hawking and Leonard Mlodinow, in their... book The Grand Design, “is dead.” It has “not kept up with modern developments in science, particularly physics, [and] scientists have become the bearers of the torch of discovery in our quest for knowledge.”
Notwithstanding their death notice for philosophy, in introducing their idea of a fundamental physical account of the universe, M-theory, the authors themselves cannot resist engaging in evident philosophizing about the nature of theories and their relationship to reality. To address the paradoxes arising from quantum physics, they use what they call “model-dependent realism,” which “is based on the idea that our brains interpret the input from our sensory organs by making a model of the world.”
