Not only in Southeast Asia. In many forms of Inner Asian and Siberian mediumistic practice, the gender of the "channeled" spirit is not the same as that of the medium. For countless examples, you could read Eliade's massive ethnographic work called "Shamanism" (being aware that many of his historical conclusions are not widely accepted).
