I'm confused. Aren't all left-leaners good/smart/peaceful and all right-leaners bad/stupid/violent? That's what my news shows keep telling me ... and how can they be wrong, they're on TV (CABLE TV!) and the INTERNET!
Shocking isn't it?

What's remarkable is that you find Anti Vaxxers, for instance, being a meeting point of radical left and right...

We love our stories ... and no story has more raw power than GOOD vs. EVIL. It's one of the reasons that the Madhyamaka view is so tough to digest, it turns the whole GOOD/EVIL thingie upside down and round and round.

Left Myth - Trump is Evil!
Right Myth - Clinton is Evil!

Nothing unites like a common enemy. What we need is a real bad guy, so we can all agree and kumbaya, "That's the bad guy! There's evil!"

This special counsel investigation is not going to rid us of Trump. And when the report turns up nothing but a bunch of seedy characters and two bit indictments, the average person who probably couldn't even identify their home state on a map will agree with Trump that all this is a witch hunt and proof of the deep state war on him.

The opposition needs to deal with this:

Trump is in the White House while the economy burns hot - whether this is real economic growth or paper growth is the trillion $ question, but it doesn't matter. When average people have a sense that everyone who wants a job can get one, they'll thank the man who will take credit for it whether he had anything to do with it or not. Their idea that they were voting for a business man who knows how to get the economy going will be validated. They're going to feel really good about themselves.

Whether good or not, he's going to have face saving "deals" with Iran, China, Korea, etc. that he's going to sell like a condo built over a toxic waste dump. "Art of the Deal". Like most people, voters won't bother reviewing the soil tests and take the salesman at his word. "Oooh, look at these granite countertops!"

The nativist stuff is not going away. This is generational. When things start getting hairy, Trump'll start barking about MS-13 and illegal rapists and get these insecure white people all worked up and motivated to get to the polls.

Democrats are about to get their teeth kicked in and their lunch money stolen.

...and why the Democrats will get slaughtered...

They're putting up new faces but the same tired old machine politicians with focus group tested stump speeches... Its a woman's turn, so we have Kamala Harris (who also checks the "black" box), and Kristen Gillibrand (riding the #MeToo wave for all its worth). If Warren can harness the progressive left energy, there's that, but she frankly does not have the charisma to win a general election.

The progressive left is having an identity politics freak out (that's what happens when 20 somethings still trying to figure out who they are get into politics fresh out of their African-American Studies or Women's Studies classes). They've got to stop demonizing white working class people.

There will not be a feel good wave of Pussy Hats riding into office. There will be a pitched fight, and we'll see how tough those candidates are under those pink hats.

Most of all, its going to be a bunch of vague, populist sounding policies - some of which are going to be too radical for the mainstream and too easy to frame as "Socialist" (still a bad word), "Vote for me because I check off these diversity boxes" and "Trump Sucks!"

No compelling alternate narrative. Just a bunch of hot buttons to push.

PS. I hope I'm wrong and we are going to have a progressive leap from the depths of this swamp. Please talk me down because this view is bringing me down, man.

The Fourth Turning is a Crisis.

Old Artists die, Prophets enter elderhood, Nomads enter midlife, Heroes enter young adulthood—and a new generation of child Artists is born. This is an era in which America’s institutional life is torn down and rebuilt from the ground up—always in response to a perceived threat to the nation’s very survival. Civic authority revives, cultural expression finds a community purpose, and people begin to locate themselves as members of a larger group.

In every instance, Fourth Turnings have eventually become new “founding moments” in America’s history, refreshing and redefining the national identity.

It's also ultimately fiction, like every other theory about ... well, pretty much everything.

But, yes, I agree: It's a nice fairy tale, after great adversity comes great reward. "When you wish u-pon a star ... "

Of course. I'm not better than the masses. Give me a compelling story to suck on for a while and I'm soothed.

Just don't leave me hanging at the end of No Country for Old Men. Tell me there is justice.
